After a 4-bar intro, I'm playing two choruses of a lovely old tune written in 1932 by the English composer and bandleader, Ray Noble - who had a successful career in both the UK and the US. The definitive vocal version of this song, in my opinion, was by South African singer, Al Bowlly, killed in his London flat by a bomb blast in WW2 - so, no vocals for me, just some no-frills, simple instrumental playing. The tune is written in D, but I've capo'ed it up to the 4th fret to make the lower notes of the melody ring out a little more.

Love Is The Sweetest Thing

Basic chords are:

D / Bm / E7 / A7 / D / Bm / E7 / A7 /
D / DM7 D7 G9 / Em / D / Bm / Em7 / A7 /
D / Bm / E7 / A7 / D / Bm / E7 / A7 /
D / DM7 D7 G9 / Em / D / E7 A7 D / / /

Bm / / / F#m / / / Em / A7 / D / / /
Em / F#7 / Bm / / / E7 / / / A7 / / /

D / Bm / E7 / A7 / D / Bm / E7 / A7 /
D / DM7 D7 G9 / Em / D / E9 A7 D / / /

When I heard the bass run it sounded familiar - I'm sure I heard it in a Beatles song - maybe it was "Good Day Sunshine".

Maybe they picked it up directly or indirectly from this song !
I've heard interviews with both John and Paul where they talked about earlier songs that influenced their music.
For example, the piano work in ' Lady Madonna' was very, very similar to an earlier song.

Macca's father played '20s and '30s stuff on the piano, and you can hear the influence in PM's bass lines and chord progressions. "Lady Madonna" is inspired directly by British trumpeter Humphrey Lytteltons's "Bad Penny Blues" - with Johnny Parker on piano.

Will, awsome as usual.  As well as your guitar skills, your musical knowledge is incredible.  I always learn something from your posts.

Haven't forgotten you, Larry - I'm away for a week starting next Monday, and gigging almost every evening this week. I'll sit down properly and get started on it when I'm back home - around 11th May.

Cheers,
