Yesterday I sat down to play my SD-50 and my high E string only make a sick death cry.

I looked down and it was flat against the frets.
The string had slipped down deep into the nut and left no clearance.

Two weeks ago, I had put on some light guage strings to experiment with.
They played ok until this happened.

I went back to mediums and all was well.

The previous set had been medium lights and they worked ok until wore out.

I liked the med-L so well I thought to experiment with lights....

...guess another nut would have to be filed and used if I wanted to return to lights.
(looks like the stock nut will work for med or med-L )

Any thoughts on this ? What is your experience ?

I haven't experienced that. But it sounds like there is a deep slot that the light string will fall into but not the medium; If so you should be able to see it. You might want to have someone make a new nut for it. Your high E string maybe not be making good contact if you have a gap under it.

I had not noticed any buzz before this thin E string worked its way down.

So - It should be possible for one NUT to be filed in a way to provide for MED ,  MED- L , or lights ?

Yes. Consider that the difference between the high E on a medium(.013) and light(.012) set is only .001" and the nut can easily be filed to accomdate either. The nut should be filed slightly larger than the string anyway.

Thanks Jeremy.
I'll have that done.
