Hey everyone, I got a zoom h2 yesterday.  This thing is great.  I hope the ebay seller isn't watching, because he sent me the wrong package.  My wife bought me the basic one with a 512MB memorey card, but it came with a 1GB and a 4GB card, a tripod stand and a silicone case, which was advertised as a more expensive package.  The unit itself had some slight cosmetic damage (memory card slot cover was broken, but the stand holds it in place anyway), so I don't feel too guilty for the error.

My question is, if I were to do some covers etc., can I post them somewhere?  Other people seem to post covers on Reverbnation and Soundclick etc, but when I tried to sign up for soundclick it gave me heaps of stuff about paying royalties and writing to the licence holder before posting etc.  I'm not interested in that kind of complication, so what do other people do?  Youtube doesn't seem to have the same limitations, but if my guitar playing and singing are bad, you certainly don't want to see my ugly mug singing it, lol.

I'd love to try writing my own songs, but it is easier to start with some covers.  I recorded a few covers last night, and they were awful, but even my wife said one of them was listentoable, which was a confidence boost.

What do others do?

I think you can put up small parts of songs ie. one verse and a chorus and be OK. Besides who's gonna go to Scotland and shake you down for doing a cover of "I shot the Sheriff?"
  But I ain't a lawyer.

To be fair, my versions are so bad they won't be recognisable anyway.  I am guesing that most people just put them up and then accept it if they are removed by admin.

I'm well impressed with the zoom h2 though, it is a great bit of kit.

Ben, Sounclick is geared towards original music production, I wouldn't recommend a lot of cover posting there. I do use Putfile for covers however, easy to use, more of a file storage site, easy to clip from for sharing too. They do seem to go down once in a while though??? Hope it helps.

Thanks Michael.  I'll look into that, if i pluck up the courage to share my pathetic attempts at singing!!!  Very helpful advice.

Hey, please do share your stuff -- that's what making music is all about (unless one is just beginning to learn the violin/fiddle -- egads!). yak

Similar to the putfile suggestion as just a place to dump your music files for sharing, is box.net (which seems more reliable than putfile in my experience).

cheers,

www.reverbnation.com is a great site to use.  I love my Zoom H2 too!  I recorded Vanilla Bean Bakery Blues for Holly with it last week.

I wouldn't worry about royalties and stuff posting covers at music hosting sites.
At most you can remove them when they ask you to, but I don't think that will happen.

IF you want to 'test the waters'
you could always do an old public domain type of song first before covers that might steal the show.

Danny Boy,....Greensleeves.....Amazing Grace   etc....

But not "Happy Birthday".  It's copyrighted, oddly enough.  But if they go after you for that one... well, we're all lost then

Well Ben the Putfile site seems to have gone down for good this time, I think it got sold. Soooo, I too am on the hunt. Box net is tied in with linkedin, I may try that myself.
