As is destined to be the case, great musicians with great records will be left off of all of our lists.  People like James Taylor have made albums as good or better than anyone and still didn't make the cut to the final 20 until your list.   I'm glad you kept him in the mix.  The funny thing is that if I were on a desert Island and couldn't have my own list I'd be pretty darned happy with any of the ones I've read so far.  All those mentioned are certainly worthy of being included in these fanciful lists.
Now someone like John Denver wouldn't necessarily even make into my top 100 but I still like a lot of his stuff.  He did have a real nice voice and sweet guitar.

JT will put the bats to sleep before you so he's the perfect antidote to killer bats.

P.S. I like a lot of James Taylor but not quite enough to get him on my list.

For me, it is his guitar playing - the first song I ever heard him do was Fire and Rain
The intro to that song really captured me.

So many of his songs have a nice guitar intro that immediately identifies the song.
I like his early work the best.

I noticed after I posted my list that someone else chose John Hartford's Steam Powered Aeroplane album.
This album made such an impression on me when it was released.
One of my inspirations for taking up the banjo in the 70's.
I had the pleasure of meeting John in the mid 90's.
What an amazing man and a great multi instrumentalist.
Sadly passed away a couple of years ago.
The Aeroplane CD is long out of print and sells for up to $100.00 on ebay.
Produced by David Bromberg and besides John.. Vassar Clements, Tut Taylor and Norman Blake make up the band.
If you are not familiar with this album, do yourself a favour and check it out.
John has another terrific album from the same era  called Morning Bugle.

The "Steam-Powered Aereo-Takes" is another amazing JH disc. Lots of early versions of tunes that later ended up on "Morning Bugle".

His Aereo-Plain album made such a huge impression on me and changed the way I thought of music. Glad to hear I'm not the only who finds it to be a desert-isle disc.

Although I didn't put any Jackson Browne on my list, I had to say Saturate, For Everyman and late For The Sky are exceptional albums.
David Lindley's playing on For Everyman is outstanding.

Good to see Jackson Browne included in your list.  Saturate Before Using could have easily been included in my 20 discs.  Probably should have been.  I literally wore out the original LP years ago.  He was always a favorite of mine and I've seen him many times live.  Once, with Bonnie Raitt, was very memorable.   I think he ranks with some of the top songrwriters of his generation.  Slometimes his lyrics can cut straight to your gut.

   Well duck what the @#$% is Randy Newman tryin to say. That he has something to give us of depth, reality, meaning.
     Nah, he's just being goofy ole Randy. IMHO   Though it means nothing.

I think he's saying that rich guys like he and Jackson, Bono and Johnny Cougar should be aware/careful of their possible hypocrisy but what do I know? It's musically terrific and really funny and I'm a huge Randy Newman fan. I would also pose the possibility that Randy is a truer artist than the others but that's just my opinion. I'm also a huge JB fan and a sucker for his sentimental stuff but as I get older I suspect that people like Newman are actually closer to the truth.
