Great topic, perfect for me because I have been wanting to explore some new artists and this list will keep me busy for a while.  Here are a few oldies that are "essential":  Robert Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, Mance Lipscomb, Reverend Gary Davis, Elmore James.

Those are all good ones alright.   Of the ones you mentioned my favorite is Elmore James.  His open D slide guitar licks have been copied by everyone who ever picked up a slide I think;  but he perfected the riff that launched a thousand tunes.  I've worked at getting that sound but I'm still not there quite yet.   I would think that, especially the Blind Boy Fuller and Mance Lipscomb style should be right up your alley.  As I mentioned a few posts ago, give Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm Kings a listen if you want to hear someone who really gets that Robert Johnson / Elmore James style down perfectly.

Taj Mahal has a new album coming out thats worth a listen.  He's been around for a while but he is definately a great musician and his album has some pretty high profile guests on it.

Welcome headsup22.  Glad you could join the party.   Taj Mahal.   One of my all time favorites.  Saw him for the first time in about 1968 and have been a fan ever since.  I never miss a chance to catch one of his shows.  See him if you can while he is still able to perform.  Last time I saw him, a couple of years ago,  his voice was very weak and he couldn't hit some of the notes any longer due to "some throat issues" as he put it.  I got the feeling this was more than a sore throat and could be permanent.....It doesn't diminish his talent on guitar and piano though.  He's still got the chops to keep you entertained.

I paid $20 to participate in a 90 minute workshop with Ernie Hawkins followed by a 2 hour concert yesterday. Not only did Ernie teach some great tricks of the trade, he has a wealth of knowledge about the history or songs, players, picking styles and guitars. Have a listen to this:

Don't pass up a chance to hear Ernie live.

I just picked up "Big Blind Bluesy" from Pat Donohue off of CD Baby. Outstanding CD of some old Country Blues covers. I didn't know but Pat is the Guitarist for Prarie Home Companion. Definetly worth a listen

Obe-wan and others:

I too am a big Kelly Joe fan (one of only a few posters that included him on my deserted island picks in a recent thread).  I know the roots/blues term is wide open but here's few ideas:

I second the earlier vote for Roy Rogers (my wife's fav), big time slide guitar, if you like harmonica he's done several recordings with Norton Buffalo

I also really like Bap Kennedy from Ireland. "Domestic Blues" was produced by Steve Earle and is awesome.  Its more singer/songwriter than showcase guitar, but fantastic music in my opinion.  Probably irish/country/roots if it needed a label.
Hillbilly Shakespeare is a disc of him doing Hank Williams covers.  His most recent work is much more pop oriented, however.

Also, a post I tried earlier (with little response).  "Nashville Sessions" by Leftover Salmon. Hippie bluegrass with amazing guest artists, mostly bluegrass but also a great one by Taj Mahal and a few others. Listen to samples at:

Also Peter Case (lead singer of the Plimsouls), lots of great music, some strictly roots/acoustic (first album-self titled, "Sings Like Hell"-a great collection of blues/country standards, etc.), then recently very bluesy "Let us Praise Sleepy John", and everything in between (e.g.,"Flying Saucer Blues" samples at:

Thanks for originating the thread, and thanks to everyone else for the suggestions...lots of music to get...
Enjoy.

I personally like Michael Powers.

Here's a review I generally agree with:

Drummer on that album is Steve Jordan.

Also, pretty much anyone who ends up on the bill at Buddy Guy's place in Chicago - Legends - You can count on them being top-notch blues players.

That's a great place to catch a show BTW.  If you have decent chops, you can
