I have been considering getting a couple new powered PA speakers. For the weight/size, price, versatility and sound I am finding I am preferring the Mackie's over the JBL and Yamaha in the 200 to 400 watt range.

I keep looking at the new 450's I think out of grandiose thinking rather than need. My intent is to have a functional PA to run my acoustics thru (all K&K w/Xlr equipped), as well as a couple vocals for small venues, backyard bar-b-q, picnic type of things etc. Rather than run thru the amp, line out to PA (which really seem redundant now days). I have a nice Mackie mixer with effects and have a pole mount speaker/monitor as well. And I have been using a couple powered studio monitors(65w) when the infrequent need arises for a PA. They are pretty anemic for any type of actual throw, my little Fishman performer actually does a better job , solo.

The point being, the 450v2 doesn't seem to have a significant advantage spec. wise other than the output. The clarity and functions are virtually indiscernible at tolerable high levels in the store. I have no doubt that in a larger venue the 450 would have a advantage due to output, but it's likely there would be a system in place anyway if that should come up. I seem to have a habit of being pennywise but pound foolish a lot, but overkill at 2+ x's the price for a older back yard picker is plain silly too. Realistically I will likely use them in place of the amp, or monitors at low volume most of the time for my personal use, but when we get the family and friends together and move it outside are the 350's going to cut it.

Then there is the low volume clarity issue too, wouldn't the 350 be better suited for small rooms and acceptable for use in place of the studio ref monitors?

Well folks, got a bit of help over at the AGF, the bass frequency response was an issue with the smaller Mackie 350 even though they are a great buy. I did happen onto these:

They basically are the clone to the Mackie 450 v2, never heard of them but the specs are great, went and heard one today, ultra clean, nice bottom and fully eq able. Ordered two, I post a more detailed review when I get them.
