Just bought my first Larrivee a used OM-01 What strings sound best?
I only have played Yairis and this is a whole new guitar for me.

Sorry I forgot the -01 not just 1

Hi Martym, you snared a rare bird there! I have an L01 and use any light guage string on it. D'Addario or Elixir usually. The 01s are terrific. I'm still kicking myself for not buying an OM01 a couple of years back. May I ask how much you paid for it?

$400 and I put 52 to 11 on. So I should probably go to 10s?

Good price. It will work fine with mediums, if you prefer them.

I was using Elixirs and they were just OK, but not great.
Lately I've been using Martin SP Lights and they seem fine on both my OM's

Welcome to the Forum Martym   :wave

I use D'Addario EXP11- 80/20's (12-53) on my OM-1.  Sound great to my ear.

I'll confuse matters even more.

I had been using Martin SP 80/20 custom lights (11/52) on my OMV-03 and went to Elixer Nanos Custom LIghts (11/52). I like them better, especially for the smoother feel and they are a little less bright to my ear.

Try them all out...........changing stings is cheap entertainment.

What a huge coincidence, I just today took delivery of my "new" OM-01 with unbound fingerboard and 1 3/4" nut (quite rare as most of them were 1 11/16" nut).

I scored it off EBay, paid $425. I think we both got amazing deals on such an excellent guitar. So happy I got what I wanted at this price rather than settling for an overseas guitar. I had wanted an older unbound parlor, but gave up waiting and the prices are getting high anyways.
FIII LS-03 IS/Hog on the way

OM-01 (For Sale soon, anyone interested?)
Republic Guitars Resolian (for slide)
A bunch of harmonicas

I've had an OM-01 for several years and finally settled on Martin Phosphor Bronze Lights. Of course, it sounds fine with almost any light or medium strings, but the Martins start out strong but not too bright (something I appreciate). They age gracefully--even when they're almost shot they have a nice character to them.

You got a great deal, too. I paid $600 for my OM-01 new and I think it's better than a lot of $2000+ guitars I've played.   :bgrin:
Larrivée OM-01
Avalon A201

The 01's are very cool. I bought a used L01 off of this forum and it's just a lovely little player. No one can believe how much it cost vis a vis the quality of the instrument. Wish I had an OM01, that's for true.

Mine has neck binding but no body binding. Getting used to it. Alway had Alvarez Yairis and this is different. I am definitely going to light gauge. Will give Martin P Bronze lights and report back. My Alvarez always used 52-11 well, this guy doesn't seem to like em so well.

Sorry to bump this thread but I have to share the love I have for my om-01.  I found elixir's to be too toppy but I've discovered some dean markley alchemy gold which give a crisp and mellow sound.

I look at this guitar with fondness every time I realise what I've put up with playing a samick for the last 16 years.  I used to covet my brother's washburn woodstock but no more!

I bought this guitar with a high end fishburn pickup fitted and it's hidden my inadequacies on quite a few gigs now.  I met Stephen Sproat and exchanged cash for the om which featured on his latest album Acer Glade http://www.stevensproat.com/.  He spent the money on the fishburn but he's turned to uke fulltime.  He's sad to let it go but hey I benefit!  I can almost feel the personal involvement in the making and use of this guitar.  Maybe I've drunk too much wine but it seems there are few in the UK and I'm a lucky guy.

I've just read this back sans wine and it's a bit much, so apologies for coming on a bit strong.

Hi OM-01 lovers!
I am trying different string sets for my OM-01 and so far my favorite are the John Pearse Bronze 200L .012
I find them very light comparing to others, sound is brilliant but with more balance, is not too bright as with other sets.
These are the perfect compromise I have found so far between the strumming approach and fingerstyle.
Cheers
