Help with tuners..

Hi,

i'm new to the forum here and just changed the tuner buttons on my guitar from the original chrome ones to a set of ebony buttons. 5 of the new buttons work fine after screwing them on tight, but the one on the low E doesn't work no matter how i tighten it! I'll screw it in tight, then attempt to bring the string up to pitch, but before i'm able to reach E the tuner slackens and i'm unable to tighten the string any further. What could the problem be?

Could it be the tuner button needs some wood putty filling to tighten its grip on the little rod in the tuner, or could it be the rod in the tuner itself is loose? The original chrome button still works fine on the low E tuner. Would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!
