Well it took me quite a while but I finally put MY first ding in my 2004 L05. It already had a dent in the back of the neck around the 9th fret when I purchased it new. I got $100 off the price for that. However, I've had it in that condition since new without making a mark of my own until the other day. After doing some recording, I put Larry back in his stand and then put my headphones down on my desk and got up and walked away. The headphone cord was around my foot and I "kicked" the headphones across the room bang into Larry with a loud crash. I checked the guitar over quickly and thought there were no ill effects until I ran my hand over the front binding on the bass side lower bout. There is a definite indentation and the finish is rough.  :<>

So I'm not going to be really really upset as these kinds of marks are going to happen regardless of how careful we are with our prize possessions. It is just part of playing the guitar. However, the edge is still a little rough to the touch and I'm wondering if any of you tech gurus (unclrob?) have any suggestions as to how to smooth out that edge so it doesn't snag clothing and just feels smoother to the touch?

Headphone cords! That sucks! Usually I just break the headphones and have to buy my nth set. Or I break the machine it's plugged into or both. I wish cordless ones actually worked.

I've got Sennheiser HDR30 wireless, but they just don't sound as good as my Sennheiser H 150 wired. Plus the wired ones are fully enclosed so I don't get crosstalk into my large diaphram condenser mic. I can never stand up without ripping them off my head though.

You can buff it gently with 0000 steel wool or use very fine grit sand paper, like wet/dry 1500-2000 or micromesh, to smooth the rough edges, then polish. Just be very carefull not to sand anywhere on the top which will create another problem. You can mask off the top and other areas you don't want to touch up to avoid making a bigger mess. A gloss top will show every little scratch you make with sand paper. Take your time and rub gently. Or you can send it to me. I promise that you will never see the problem again!

I've heard his guitars have a 2 year lifespan. Get to work!

Thanks JimmyD!

The finish on Larrivee gloss models is poly isn't it? (The Larrivee website is down at the moment). I wonder how it would be affected by Meguir's ScratchX and Zymol.

I have three Rickenbackers and the finish is conversion varnish. I learned a technique from the Ric gurus of Meguir's ScratchX followed by two or three buffed coats of Zymol. It works wonders on the Rics and they come up with an amazing mirror-like finish.

But I'm unsure about using the process on the Larrivee gloss.

At least you weren't walking by the fireplace and ground about 1/8 of an inch of headstock off on the brick, like I did. I did that on day 2 of owning my new D03, which was a replacement for the D03 that was stolen a month beforehand. :roll

shout 'Freebird' one more time. see what happens.
