Over all the years I have been playing I have never owned a 12 string, but from time to time that 12 string GAS rears its head. One of those times is now, but since I have not played many 12's, I am looking for some advice & guidance. I want to try a 12 string, but don't want to spend too much, in case it is ultimately not for me. (I have heard some players complain that 12's are one trick ponies) At the same time, I want to try a guitar that is quality enough to give me a good taste of what I can expect from a 12.  If I really enjoy it maybe I would upgrade down the road.

Given the state of the JCBGF (That would be the JCBuggs Guitar Fund) I would probably want to spend no more than 4-5 hundred. With that budget maybe I could get a decent used 12er.

So any suggestions? What should I try to find?

Thanks,

Joe

Seagul and other related brands.

Absolutely.  Seagull S12+ with a cedar top and satin finish.  Very nice.

I like 12 strings to sound bright and chimey (I'm a Rickenbacker/Beatles/Byrds nut) so the cedar 12's just don't do it for me. Nor do any of the Seagulls, Taks, Fenders or other budget priced 12 stringers.

My favourite 12 string is a Yamaha... the FG720-12 to be exact. Terrific quality of materials and bright jangly tone all for $400. Remember, this is coming from someone who traded a Larrivee L03-12 for the Yamaha FG720-12 (and a bunch of other stuff...)

This from Harmony Central:
Quote
I've been playing guitar since The Beatles made their First Tour of the Colonies! I've owned a couple of Madeira guitars over the years and have loved em all. The only supprise you'll get with this guitar is the prices are so low on a Quality guitar! I love that it looks, sounds, feels Great! It ranks right up there with the best of the brands...new or old. It would be nice to have a LR Baggs system installed... I may do that soon, so I don't have to fool with the Microphone.

If you want a true Pawn Shop Prize... Look at this guitar or Any Madeira.

And this from flea bay:  http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Guild-Madeira-AM-12-12-string-guitar_W0QQitemZ180021899115QQihZ008QQcategoryZ2385QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I've played a couple of Madeira's and they're not bad for the money.

and then there's one of these:  http://cgi.ebay.com/Fender-12-String-Electric-Acoustic-Guitar-JG12CE-12-NS_W0QQitemZ150025174914QQihZ005QQcategoryZ47064QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem.

I don't have a lot of confidence in acoustic guitars from Fender though.  Electrics are what they do best.

A twelve string is a really neat guitar.  But they're not for everybody.  In one sense they can indeed be a one trick pony as you've heard (if you limit yourself to strumming and twelve-string standards).  In another sense, a twelve string guitar can open an entirely new and creative foundation - there are many things you can do with a twelve string once the juices get flowing.

One important thing though. . . .it is absolutely essential that you first play any twelve string you intend to buy.  That is of course true of all guitars, but it is especially true of twelve strings due to their wider necks and various goofy neck profiles on some of them.  Definitely play the guitar or arrange a trial period (48 hours?) before you commit to buy.  (Twelve strings are difficult to re-sell because there's a much smaller field of players and potential buyers).

Here is a listing for a D-03-12 that appears to be a few years old but in good shape.

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-LARRIVEE-12-STRING-DREADNOUGHT-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ190024985032QQihZ009QQcategoryZ2385QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Naboz and Randy Rick were introduced to Larrivees due to D-03-12s. They seem to be great ones and you may be able to pick this one up for little more than your $500 limit.

(for the record, I have no connection with the auction or its seller, just trying to help out a fellow forumite)
