I read a discussion at another website about getting the very high gloss finish on a satin guitar by using buffing wheels and compound.  One comment was:

Usually satin finishes can be rubbed and buffed to a high gloss, which would take going through a couple of different grades of compound.....but even if the buffing is successful, the flattening agent that makes the surface set up as satin is all through the finish, not just on the surface. So what happens is that as the finish wears, the wear areas go back to satin

My polish job is nowhere near high gloss (just done by hand), but an interesting post.

You'll never get a flat finish to a 'high'gloss, just more glossy than flat.  And wear will only shine, not get flatter/
