Mississippi John Hurt has always been a favorite of mine and this past week I have been especially interested in him, playing a bunch of his songs and doing a lot of research. I think I have read nearly everything that has ever been posted on the net about the Candyman. During this journey I have come across some real gold, which I thought I would share with everyone.

The first is a radio broadcast from 64. It features MJH playing a few tunes and answering a few questions. On a couple songs someone is blowing a little harp with him. Skip James is also present and gives a great interview. This was shortly after Skip was rediscovered and from what I understand really had to re-learn how to play.

This second recording is believed to be done at the Philly Folk Festival, however the date associated with it has to be wrong. On it Jerry Ricks and John Sebastian come up to play "Make Me a Pallet" with MJH. John mentions the importance of Avalon Blues. Incredible stuff!!!

Josh,

Always happy to hear, listen, or talk about anything to do with MJH....its his fault that I'm into acoustics as deep as I am...and in particular it was the song Candyman that hooked in...I found it on a random acoustic blues compilation and after the first time I heard it...I knew I would have to learn to play it....I'm still not quite ready for it yet....but perhaps soon.  Hurt's music sounds deceptively simple....and much of it is simple to get the notes down....but the feeling and tempo....WOW the man was a master!!!

keep the info coming!

:cheers

MJH is by far my favorite acoustic blues artist.
One of my favorite clips is MJH on Pete Seeger's show (Rainbow something) where he talks about "Lonesome Valley" so gently then comes in with the bass thumping and music is just rushing out of him, and it's sorta ironic at the end when the lady sitting next to him says something to the effect of 'that was lovely' in a subdued pleasant tone. I probably wouldn't have been able to say anything had it been me but if I had, I would have jumped up and shouted Hallelujah!

Here's the clip, too bad the dialogue is cut out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXbPya2kypI&mode=related&search=

Thanks for posting those,btw.

That is a great video Jeremy.
Here is a list of tabs that I have found. I know there is more, but this is pretty complete. In the first link you must download a program, which I can not since it doesn't support macs. So, I can not speak to the quality, but this is an incredible list of tabs that you can't find anywhere else such as Hot Town, Funky Butt, Salty Dog...

I was reminded of a tab book that I had forgotten about. It is in PDF format and pretty good.

Also on the above page is a great written interview. It is a fun read and goes into some details about the stories behind some songs.
