During the last few days there have been several very strongly worded posts regarding "this is better than that".

So, I decided to let you knowledgeable folk have a go at proving how you can differentiate brand, body size, tone woods, etc. in a real live test. The following clip was randomly chosen from some recording I did yesterday of a guitarist laying down some rythym parts for his new album. It is exactly as recorded; no compression, no effects, no tweaks.

http://www.ronmacnutt.com/Music/What.mp3

Have a listen to this clip and identify the following:

1) Guitar brand
2) Body size
3) Tonewood combination
4) Bone/tusq/etc. nut and saddle
5) 80/20 or PB strings
6) Coated or uncoated strings
7) Pick material/thickness

Prizes? You want prizes? Well we've got prizes!!!!

1st Prize   First person to correctly identify all 7 components listed above

I will fly the winner to Nova Scotia, feed and water them for two weeks, and make sure they go home with some nice musical memories (including the guitar that was recorded)!

2nd Prize  First person to correctly identify any 6 components listed above

I will buy the winner a new LSV-11 Larrivee guitar!

3rd Prize  First person to correctly identify any 5 components listed above

I will buy the winner a new 03 series guitar, any body size, any tonewood combo that is available

This should be very easy for most of you. There are no embellishments to the tracks, and no other tracks hiding the intricate qualities that are so easily identified.

Let the games begin!!!!!!

Sorry Rob, the judicial system in Canada is above all of that, and can't be bribed!

OK, sometimes they blurt out things without thinking after having a few too many Scotches...

If I wn I want to give away the trip to unclrob. I'll keep the guitar, unless it's an Esteban. Unclrob can have that too.

Hi - new to the forum but this looked like much more fun than the endless "my guitar can beat up your guitar" tirades  -_-

Plus, there are prizes at the end of this thread  :WNK>

So, here are my guesses:
1) Guitar brand   Larrivee
2) Body size   OM
3) Tonewood combination   Sitka/Rosewood
4) Bone/tusq/etc. nut and saddle   bone
5) 80/20 or PB strings   PB
6) Coated or uncoated strings   coated
7) Pick material/thickness   celluloid medium

You're leading the pack...

Great, because if you not leading the pack the view never changes and if your on a dog sled team the view isn't that appealing.

How many guesses do we get ?

1) Guitar brand-gibson
2) Body size-Dread
3) Tonewood combination-Sitka/Mahogany
4) Bone/tusq/etc. nut and saddle-FWI
5) 80/20 or PB strings-80/20
6) Coated or uncoated strings-Uncoated
7) Pick material/thickness-Nylon Pick/Thin

I'm gonna kick myself if it's maple.  Sounds A LOT like a Gibson J-45. Possibly a WM-45?

If people post their guesses (er: educated opinions) on the forum, and Ron postes their score... One may eventually be able to pick the right choices mathematically.

I just thought I'd confuse the process..

After listening over it again here's my take.  :GRN>

1) Guitar brand-Taylor
2) Body size-Dread
3) Tonewood combination-Sitka/maple
4) Bone/tusq/etc. nut and saddle-tusq
5) 80/20 or PB strings-80/20 Elixers
6) Coated or uncoated strings-coated
7) Pick material/thickness-Nylon Pick/Thin

Sounds like a Taylor 610 to me.

Randy, what's the fun in mathematically figuring it out?

SR, I changed it to a gibson...it really sounds like a J-45 to my ears. Us firsties are probably not gonna win jack, but it's fun trying!  I'm a gambling man!

You know someone with like 12+ High end guitars is going to win this!  I'm thinking the guitar is more costly than a Gibson J-45...seeing how 2nd price is a VERY expensive guitar, but oh well, I'll stick with my gut.
