Title: Is Larrivee Making Ukuleles Again? Found Something Interesting
Post by: Cybenator on September 30, 2005, 01:10:20 AM
While crusing Elderly's website to I noticed this:

http://www.elderly.com/brand/180N_LARRIVEE.html

Am I to believe uke production has begun again at Larrivee?

I want one (but my eyes are set on something else), now I just need to learn how to play the uke.

I think these are just probably the last few in the shop.  Perhaps from wood that are too nice to throw out but too small for guitars.

Calvin - nothing to learn, really. It's like playing a guitar capo'd at 5.

The Elderly ones are billed as "last chance"

I thought they had a different tuning -- the "My Dog Has Fleas" tuning, whatever that is.

Coincidentally, the latest Frets magazine has a cover story on a young guy who is billed is "the Hendrix of the uke".

GCEA re-entrant tuning with the G being an octave higher G. Strumming technique is much different than a guitar.

I saw some Larrivee ukuleles at the Vancouver facility while on tour a couple of weeks ago. Very nice Koa. Good thing they don't make tenors or I would probably buy one.

Jake Shimabukuro is MUCH more than the Jimi Hendrix of Ukulele, live he is amazing- transitioning from rock to classical to traditional to original all in a twenty minute period. A definite must see, last time I saw him I purchased tickets 10 months in advance- the smaller venues he plays sell out quickly.

You are right (in most cases - some have a low 4th string tuning - baritones are tuned dgba the same as a guitar, and some tune tenors low to high.), but the high or rentrant string is one octave above - so the chord forms for the 1st 4 strings of the guitar will make chords on a uke - only as if at capo 5.

And yes, as NRGD said, a lot of different techniques are used on uke. But with the familiar tuning intervals, even in spite of the reentrant 4th string,  you'll be able to make music right out of the box.

What a beaut - I tried to get a plain mahog one when GA had them, but just missed.

Yes....I got this one from dave at GA.  I believe it was the NAMM show uke.  It just seems to me that ukes, koa and palm trees go together....
