Title: Larrivee OM/Baggs iBeam combo question
Post by: uncleshish on July 20, 2005, 03:07:05 AM
Has anyone had any luck with the outcome of this combination?

I have a '96 OM-05 that I recently installed an Active LR Baggs iBeam.
I have attempted two placements thus far and both were over-the-top bassy and muddy in the midrange.

I'm wondering if anyone could give me tips if they had a successful placement with this system.
I'd also like to hear from those who have not been pleased with their end results.

I use the Baggs iMix in both my Taylors and also had the Baggs Dual Source in a previous OM-03 and
was/am very pleased with the sound so I figured the Active iBeam was a sure winner.

I also thought I should add that I don't wish to get involved with doing a bunch of fiddling around with an eq or anything else for that matter. What I'm looking for is to go from one guitar to the next in a set without a bunch of monkeying around. I am using the Genz benz Shen 100.
Thanks

Hi Chris, I have installed the IBeam in several OM's, and used it in my personal OMV for years.  I have the best luck putting the pickup almost directly under the saddle.  That gives me the most direct sound, with good clarity and good snap.  If you go closer to the soundhole it will get less direct, and more woody sounding.  I am sorry yours isn't working well.  Maybe your gain was set incorrectly at the factory?  Usually they work great in Larrivee's.  Good luck.  J

I just installed one in my OM-03 R SH and it sounds very good. It replaced a Fishman Rare Earth humbucker and mic combo that I removed to simplify things.

Is there any way to go in and change the setting?

Chris,

Can't address the gain question but I put an active iBeam in my OM3W and it sounds like my guitar but louder.  I only use EQ if going into a bigger PA, but through my acoustic amp it's basically flat.  Maybe move it to directly under the bridge?  Email Baggs, they are great about placement assistance.

Good luck, sounds like a nice combination.

Mike

Thanks for the tip Mike,

I actually did email Baggs but have not yet heard back from them. I did my third placement and it sounds better...but still not what I was expecting compared to my other experiences with their products.

Hi Chris, I don't believe the gain is adjustable on the IBeam active.  With the IMix and other pickups with the inboard preamps you can adjust them yourself.  The IBeam has to be adjusted at the factory.  Good luck, I hope you find a setup that works for you.  J
