Title: Setup for acoustic - mic'd no pickup, home, small venues
Post by: Hooked on May 28, 2020, 01:37:33 PM
Finally getting over the stage fright to be able to do local jams, open mics, and even try my hand at recording at home. I've started on the home recording setup - using my OM-40 with a Shure SM-57 , going into a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, with Studio 4 on my PC. THe astonishing array of things to do with recording is overwhelming.

Going out 'on the road' to small indoor venues, what do you guys use for such? I'd likely take my Seagull for that - and happy to put a pickup in that. Not as ready to take the Larrivee out yet, but probably, eventually. Maybe.

An old beginner, looking for pointers.

Well, first thing to ask is if you plan on singing as well as playing, and if you are primarily going to be solo, or working with another player or singer?
1. Bose and Fishman both have self contained easy to transport systems you can get into for under 1000 dollars.
2. For lower cost, one might consider getting a small mixer and a single powered PA speaker. Mackie makes both and that "could" put you in business for around 400 dollars.
Research. We have had forum discussions about this, applicable to both pro and amateur level.

Thanks, Mike. If someone is singing, it isn't me! But I take your point and will do more digging.

Playing out in a venue with an audience (whether they are paying attention or not) is quite different from monitoring your playing as fed into your home studio signal chain in the comfort of your studio space.

For playing out (in my case - solo fingerstyle, flesh and nail), I like an internal pickup and a mic (usually an external small diaphragm condenser), separately EQ'ing those two sources before blending them.  With a quality signal chain, this can sound quite authentic with a bit of a larger than life sound and behaviors.

As much as I'd rather play thru a mic which is IMHO the only way to record.I would prefer playing live thru a mic but everyone wants to be loud which means the monitor ends up loud which means feed back I'm playing with a pu.I have used a internal mic for a few years and was never happy with it my duo partner love's his me I can never get a good eq .Which after reading what I just posted doesn't seem to make sence but I'm leaving the post as is.

Its kinda strange back in the older days {70's} I played in a band using a SM57 with no hassel I could get loud and still hear my monitor by placing it to my side and up on a milk crate.

And my ears are still ringing!  :cheers

I went through a similar journey when I started recording at home. At first, I felt scared and insecure because I did not know how to use equipment and software related to recording. However, after a while of researching and learning, I overcame that fear and started to feel more confident when recording at home with download game mod apk by getmodnow (https://getmodnow.com/)
Regarding equipment, I invested 1 Shure SM7B microphone and 1 Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 sound card to record better sound. However, I also enjoy using mobile devices like the Zoom H5 or H6 to record while traveling or doing online interviews.

Zoom Hx seems convenient.
Not sure whether to get one or go matched pair mic.
