Post by: Walkerman on December 23, 2017, 06:19:28 PM
Saw a beautiful cedar topped hog parlor.   Sorry for poor quality ... used my phone.

Yes, this ... instead of going to a dealer?  :?

I'm a tad confused here.
Is "Yarnell Place" in Oxnard California?

I'm confused as to Jeans apparel.
I was just out shovelling snow and had to cancel tonights gig because of cold temperatures, snowfall warnings and bad road conditions.

I might have been wearing something similar to what Jean is wearing in this picture. (probably was).
Last i checked it was around 17 degrees farenheight outside my door.
How cold is it in Oxnard?

It is a second.

That makes more sense.  I thought you bought it and it was already going to Reverb.  Does Larrivee sell guitars on Reverb?  If so, under what shop name because I haven't seen it before.

For a while their shop supervisor listed some NOS and seconds on Reverb at Oxnard Guitar Works, but I do not see any products listed there now...

I could not say.  That was just an assumption on my part since it was a second.  I guess I shouldnít assume.

His shop closes up every now and again. Probably away for the holidays or something. Check back again in the new year is my guess. If you have a reverb account you can follow his shop and listings. Every time a new item is listed you will get a notification.

When I purchased my new LV-03RE Cedar Top, the dealer mentioned he'd been told there were no more Cedar Tops a'coming. Something about the quality of cedar available not being up to snuff for JCL. Yet here's a nicely topped Parlor. Which I think is gorgeous!! If only I needed (ha!) a Parlor.

Jean says he hates working with cedar because they have so many problems with it.  Too many repairs.

I would like to hear more of Jean's specific concerns with cedar.  Lots of classical guitar are made with it.

That was his concern .... bridges and bracing pull off.  He said you have to baby them.  That being said, I have a cedar topped Pacific parlour by Goodall, and I absolutely love it.

For what is it worth I have a cedar topped OO that was made in 2004.  I have had it since mid 2013 and have had no issues. I just play on the couch but it gets  played 3-4 times a week.   I seem to remember reading some more details of JCLs opinion on cedar.  I am pretty sure it was somewhere on the forum and may have been in the AMA Mathew did a while back.  If you search for cedar the a number of threads.

Edit: I did some searching and here (http://www.larriveeforum.com/smf/index.php?topic=10248.msg412598#msg412598) is the post I was thinking of

Cheers

In the early seventies, when I bought my first larrivee, it had a Cedar top.
At that time, Jean swore by cedar.
It can be a problem wood, not as stable as Spruce.

YIKES!! That is 70 degrees colder than our high for the day here.....
I once experienced 25 below F, with wind chills making it minus 80.
Not something I care to experience again, ever.
Stay warm, brother.

It really isn't as bad as it sounds, you can dress for it, whereas its difficult to dress for extreme heat  :cheers

When Princess and I were in Finland, we were told that Finnish children are taught at a young age that there is no such thing as bad weather, but rather, just poor dressing for it.

tru  dat,
this morning was minus 30,
yes dressing warmly is something us Canucks can do.
Minus 30 by the big river ( which divides our nations over here),
where I ski, in Quebec, minus 30 at the foot of the mountain, minus 40 at the top,
add in wind, as you're skiing down, and it's a frosty one.

also, cars don't like the extreme cold ( fluids are quite thick, transmission, etc).

I need to apologize for my error in temperature readings.

I have a dual read-out thermometer outside my kitchen window.

The other morning i reported it said minus 28 farenhieght.
In fact that was minus 28 celcious, which, is only minus 20 on the farenhieght side.

sorry to mislead.

either way, it's really #@&*$ing cold out.

Yuck!  Either way, -28F or -20F, itís too cold for a weather wuss like me!  I spent two winters in NW Iowa, and honestly anything below about -5F was almost too cold to discern!  (Itís also hell on wood instruments.  Being from the PNW, I never had to really think about humidity problems.  My violin cracked that first winter, and I had to ship it home to be repaired.  Lesson learned!)

In our neck of the woods, I need to keep a de-humidifier on May-October.
then a humidifier running full December to part of april.

Our temps go to plus 35 C in the summer to minus 30 in the winter.

yes, hard on musical instruments, especially on the road, in and out of vehicles, to and from gigs.

One set of great grandparents was from Finland and I can vouch for that longstanding and wonderful philosophy. Now we just refer to it as layering.  :laughin:

Yeah, ditto that as well. I told Nina about the post and she said the same for Sweden... "There is no bad weather, just bad clothing". She said it in Swedish, too.

Since the thread has evolved, I'll contribute.

Here in Edmonton, for the last week, it has been in the low -30s C overnights and only up to -27ish C for daytime highs.  Tonight it is forecast to dip to -35C.  That's damn cold.  Add any amount of wind and we are hitting -40 to -45C wind chill values.  Exposed skin will become frost-bitten in less than 5 minutes with these values.  Hot air furnace is running almost constantly.  Humidification of the guitar room is an absolute must right now.  My little humidifier is putting out about a gallon of water every 12 hours right now to maintain an RH of about 45% around my guitars.

Looks like a reprieve coming by mid week though.  Highs hovering around 0C or 32F.
