Title: OM Legacy series vs. OM Traditional series
Post by: mattwood on August 13, 2017, 08:44:35 AM
I'm wondering if anyone has compared these models in the same woods to one another.  Most of what I see from the specs are aesthetic differences but there is a substantial prices difference in the traditional series being much more expensive.  What about the tone?  Is there much difference there?

Matt, I'm wondering the same thing - I'm torn between the OM-05 and the OM-40r. I know they're two different woods but the  RW just LOOKS nicer to me under the satin finish. I believe the bracing change on the Legacy series leans the guitar a little more towards a Martin tone.  In demo vids, which can be deceiving, I can't hear a lot of difference between the rosewood and mahogany in either series but I do hear a difference between the Legacy and Traditional - it seems to me that the Legacy isn't quite as 'sparkly' as the Traditional. Maybe someone who has both will give us a clue.

I have owned some traditional Larrivee...OM03, L03, L02, and L03R. I now have a Legacy 00040R and a Legacy 00040 all mahogany, both 12 fret, and with large sound holes. I recently traded a Legacy OM40 mahogany, 14 fret, standard sound hole.

In general, the Legacy instruments are deeper in the bass, more robust in tone, and louder than I found the standard series to be. I, personally, like the sound, you may not.  I tried a Legacy D03R, and one each of the Legacy L series in both rosewood and mahogany.  I found those all a bit too deep, robust and not as balanced as the others...maybe too much of a good thing? Other folks seem to like them, however, so it's just my personal observation.

Best to try them if at all possible, I know that it isn't always practical to do that. As an alternate, order from a dealer with a fair return policy.

Good luck, they're all Larrivee, so you'll never go too far wrong.

Roger

Same guitars here and I agree 100%.  I just love the Legacy 40 series guitars.

When I talk about the traditional series, I was meaning the OM-50 vs. the OM-40 or the OM-60 vs. the OM-40R.
