Title: Bridge Pins
Post by: Skip Ellis on July 01, 2017, 02:25:22 PM
Does anyone know if the factory bridge pins on a 2008 L-05 would have been ebony or some kind of black plastic? The ones that are in it have abalone dots. Forum member Mattwood who I bought it from said he thought they were original to  the guitar. I think I'm going to replace them with some Colosi aged bone with tortoise dots - should look real nice on the  Sitka/mahogany guitar.

The pins, nut and saddle  etc. seem to be different than what may be in the catalog.

I do a drop test on a hard surface and usually can tell by the sound if they are plastic. But yours probably are ebony.

Some pins were tusq, as well as nut and saddles. I like your choice for the new pins.

If I really want to know, I heat a pin and touch a spot that doesn't show....  if it's unaffected, it's bone (or some sort of bone-like material), if the pin easily goes in, it's some sort of plastic (including TUSQ), if it burns and smokes, it's some sort of wood.  If it's some sort of metal (I've seen brass and aluminum), I don't bother.
