Title: Need Help identifying this G&L guitar
Post by: AF_ONE on March 08, 2017, 04:46:36 PM
Can anyone tell me about this guitar--I cannot seem to find any details per the website.  Its obviously an ASAT Z-3 with a gorgeous flame top, birdseye neck and locking tuners.  It mint condition with no fret wear.  My questions are:
Whats the body wood?  Ash or Alder?
Whats the color called?
What year was it produced?
Are these particularly rare?  I haven't found another with these upgrades.
Any thoughts or comments on these?

The body looks like swamp ash - *some* alder has grain like that in it, but I'm betting this one (a T style) is ash.

Can't help you with the other questions.

I agree it looks like ash.  If I was to name that color I would call it "amber", perhaps.  Depending on it's age, it may have been more of a natural wood color and has yellowed over time.  But it's more likely it was stained that color, I think.

It looks a lot like this guitar  http://www.guitar-museum.com/guitar-56906-G-amp-L-ASAT-Z-3 (http://www.guitar-museum.com/guitar-56906-G-amp-L-ASAT-Z-3)

This is saying flamed top over Basswood body.  Custom Shop build.  However, G&L typically uses Alder for their bodies with an upgrade to Swamp Ash.  So I'm guessing this may be either a mistake or a one-off.

Whats the color called?  I'm guessing the finish is Honeyburst.  http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/USA/finishes/index.asp (http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/USA/finishes/index.asp)

What year was it produced? Probably between 2001 and 2005 based on the neck number.  G&L's necks and bodies are both numbered and can sometimes be from a few years apart.  There is a registry / lookup at this website that is user generated.  http://www.guitarsbyleo.com/ (http://www.guitarsbyleo.com/)

Are these particularly rare?  I haven't found another with these upgrades.  I don't see a lot of Z3s.  But it's not something I'm on the lookout for.  Upgrades can all be ordered from G&L they've got a nice page discussing the options available.  http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/usa/options/guitar.asp  (http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/usa/options/guitar.asp)

I love the G&L ASAT, here's my 16 year old Natural finish on Swamp Ash.  But I've been playing the RS2 mostly lately.  Need to play this one more...
