Title: SKY PILOT
Post by: Danny on February 06, 2017, 07:21:37 AM
The term "Sky Pilot" was mentioned in a BPS series I was watching and it took me way back. Eric Burdon was a favorite of mine as a teenager.
Until he ventured into grander things than the Animals, and faded quickly from view.

But "Sky Pilot" in my view was the best of the Vietnam protest songs in that era.

There is a short and long version.  Both are worth a listen.  The lyrics are a bit different in each version.

I almost enlisted, to serve in Vietnam, a young man who had just came back convinced me not to. I'm glad he did.

He blesses the boys as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease
And the bayonets they shine
He's there to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted he's a good holy man
Sky pilot
Sky pilot
How high can you fly?
You'll never, never, never reach the sky

He smiles at the young soldiers
Tells them it's all right
He knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight
Soon there'll be blood and many will die
Mothers and fathers back home they will cry
Sky pilot
Sky pilot
How high can you fly?
You'll never, never, never reach the sky

He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile
The order is given
They move down the line
But he'll stay behind and he'll meditate
But it won't stop the bleeding or ease the hate

That is a great song.  I loved The Animals.  They had an extra edge to them compared to their contemporary British Invasion bands.

Eric influenced many musicians in England.

Here's the original video from 1968, long version.

:+1:   "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"  "Bring It On Home To Me" and of course "The House Of The Rising Sun"  still rank at the top of my play list...

Huge fan of EB and the Animals but have to say that would be one of my least favorite songs of theirs. Actually, I believe it would be EB without the Animals. Didn't much like his hippy period even when I was a hippy.   :laughin:

It was not my favorite, but it was timely for me and made me rethink things.

I love the Animals but my favorite Viet Nam protest song would be either Fortunate Son by Creedence or War by Edwin Starr. But there were so many that were great it is hard to even pick.

Of course Barry Maguire had a good one with Eve of Destruction.
A friend and I got a chance to spend time with Barry back in the seventies, he played lots of songs for us and told us all about the decadence in Hollywood.
Quite a nice time with a real troubadour.

I will bet that was Very Cool.  Was it a coincidence that it was about the time when Outlaw Country was out in such a big way, especially in Austin?

It's funny you say that, last night I had trouble falling asleep. And the song "When I Was Young" kept playing in my mind, for hours.

I play it in my car a lot.  Every time I hear the beginning, I think it is Black Sabbath's "Iron Man."
