Late to see this, but thanks - my wife and I can listen to Vince Gauraldi's "Charlie Brown" Christmas music anytime...

Russell Malone added tasty guitar playing to Diana Krall's group for a number of albums in the '90's (love her smooth jazz voice and piano playing).

Well, a dissenting voice here.....

There's only one sure way to get me to go
Start playing old time rock and roll

Ha. Used to see him (and talk to him) when he was 21/22 and playing in bars in Atlanta. I even recorded him myself when he came and jammed with the great Thumbs Carilille at bar right up the street. He caught my attention again when he started playing with your fellow Canadian Dianna Crall. Great stuff there. Early or mid 90's I think. He was very good and had great tone even when he was pretty much a kid. Let me see if I can find some recordings I did on net..........

http://thumbscarllile.net/Thumbsmp3s/PoiintVol1/13_Track_13.mp3    Move

http://thumbscarllile.net/Thumbsmp3s/PoiintVol1/10_Track_10.mp3   Take 5

I recorded these in 86' just a couple weeks before Thumbs died   On both of these Russell Takes first break and Thumbs the next.
You can tell too by sound. Malone played a fat Gibson hollowbody and Thumbs played a Tele....that Delany Bramlett gave him. George Harrison had given it to Bramlett. I've held that guitar hoping something would rub off but it didn't work! I'm still friends with Thumbs sweet wife Virginia.

Ah Diana Krall! I didn't think I'd seen him before but now I recognize Malone. The name didn't ring a bell. Thanks for sharing that. Good stuff. Thumbs Carllile? What a great name, by the way and a good story on the tele.   :thumb

Thumbs was a genious who played any kind of music. Actually made most of his living playing country but played  with the likes of Les Paul, Chet Adkins ect. He played overhand, because he started when he was like 3 years old and that's how he reach it. Used only his Thumbs at first hence nickname.  Here's a clip from that same bar audio recording came from. He had already been thru the mill health wise with cancer and heart. Told me he was about 75% of his old self on guitar.  Correction on above post. It was 87' He died end of July 87.  http://thumbscarllile.net/video/MysteryTrain.html

http://thumbscarllile.net/video/BlueSkies.html   More jazzy and mall or something.

That's so cool. Thanks for expanding my musical knowledge. I wish my nickname was "Thumbs". Unfortunately, it would be "All Thumbs".   :cheers
