Title: Artist You Got Tired Of For One Reason or Another
Post by: ducktrapper on September 28, 2016, 01:34:53 PM
Are there artists that you used to love that you got tired of and don't listen to anymore? Not that they aren't good or stopped making decent music just artists that for some reason don't do it for you anymore and even the old stuff that you love doesn't work for you anymore. For me it's Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young. It took me a while to realize it and I was still buying all their music up to Wrecking Ball and Psychedelic Pill but after a listen or two, I never listened to them again. Anyone in a similar boat?

Steely Dan, Tom Petty, Doobie Bros., Fleetwood Mac and Rolling Stones.  Now, these are all fine bands (except for Steely Dan, of course), but the part of their catalogues they play is so small that I just hear the same songs too much.

I must be lucky ... I have no idea who Coldplay is nor could I name a single tune of theirs.

I figure ALL bands and performers have about a three album limit before they or we burn out. I think even the good ones have about a five year period where we love them, then sort of like them, then never want to hear them again. In five years or so it all starts over.

Abba,  Bee Gees (once they went disco), Ventures, Alabama, Black Sabbath, Whitesake and most "heavy metal" bands.

R.E.M. Was a band I did not dig, then liked for a couple albums, then got turned off when they added horns to one of their albums. Now and then I will revisit some of their older stuff.

Coldplay's Parachutes album was fantastic in my opinion, tweaking some of the sounds I enjoyed in the days of my youth from the 80's. Then I tired of it because I played it too much. Some of the less popular songs on that album are very nice guitar oriented songs. I tired of them also with all of the Coldplay wannabes came along like Mat Kearney and a boatload of other nasally singers.

As a multi instrumentalist I tend to catch on to bands long after their cool factor was established or has even faded. Only recently have I begun to like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, as one example after I began learning the ins and outs of playing Hammond organ in a rock type setting.

I'm starting to dig the Smiths from now realizing how killer the bass lines are in many of the songs, after learning pedestrian bass capabilities on my own.

I went through a fusion phase in the 80s and I can't really stand a lot of my collection from that era any longer; Pat Matheny, Hiroshima, Yellowjackets, etc.

U2 would be another mostly because I started to despise Bono's rock star self importance. I loved early REM but they kind of petered out on me. They were terrific when I saw them in concert, however. Tom Petty & the HBers kind of futzed around for a long while but they've come back strong with their last couple albums. They used to say that Van Morrison could sing the phone book and be great and for his last several albums, he's been trying to prove it.  :laughin:

Once they copied the Beatles rooftop concert, I lost any interest I may have had in U2.  Besides, what is with this Bone or the Edge name crap.

These guys were high school age buddies and these were their nicknames for each other back then. Bono is short for Bono Vox.

You can call Bono being self righteous, but there's plenty of evidence that he backs what he preaches with personal action. I'll take a thousand self righteous Bono's to every other self important rock stars who do nothing with their privileged access to movers and shakers other than to self promote.

Something about him actually able to do what we all would like to do for the world to make it a better place for all rubs people are he wrong way, which is kind of twisted.

Other than Bono, The Edge and Sting I can think of no others who go by silly teenage nicknames. Do I need to apologize for beginning to think less of them for it? Hey Paul, Dave and Gord ... grow the **** up.

Three that readily come to mind from my youth are Seals and Crofts, America and the Doobie Brothers. Nowadays, I can tolerate but a few of their songs.

A bit of trivia.  I watched a documentary on George Martin and discovered he produced some of America's albums.

Interesting thread...  there have been artists that have changed (or ironically, failed to change), that I've lost interest in (their newer stuff).  In general, I still like what I once liked.  Genesis is a good example.  I loved (and still love) the Peter Gabriel era stuff.  The first album without him was ok.  The next was meh (as the youngsters say these days), and then when Steve Hackett left, yuck.

Maybe I'll start a thread for artists that people once disliked (or just dismissed) and started liking.

Well it's Bono Vox, and The Edge.  Both two word nicknames. Hey, it was a different generation, and if it worked in that generation why mess with success?  Not saying you have to like them, but you asked what was up with their names, both of which are actually two words and over time people got used to calling them a shorter one word version.  Has happened throughout pop music history. Name a decade and there are plenty you can conjure up by just one word or a word and a definite article. The King, Frank, Sammy, Aretha, Smokey, the Boss, etc.

Back in the 80s or maybe 90 a radio station was taken over by rogues in St Pete/Clearwater area. They played led zeppelin 24/7 for weeks. I would tune in from time to time. Haven't listened to zeppelin since.

Yes, back in the 80's.  Was a fan before they became huge stars and like others in their teens devoured any bits of info I could find on them.  I'm not expecting you to like them, just pointing out single nicknames came long before them and continues to this day.

Whatever anyone thinks of Bono, and I'm not necessarily a fan, his band has made some great music that has meant a lot to a great many people. Would be hard to argue that.

I thought the Joshua Tree album was the best release for a long time. I still like most of the cuts.

I now enjoy most of their albums, exception being the Zoo era stuff. Latest album a bit weak as well.

I have to agree with that, Joshua Tree and the stuff before it was pretty good but Rattle and Hum, while containing some good tunes, turned me off to them personally and subsequent events have not changed my mind.

I'll add Elvis Costello, someone whose music I really liked but grew to dislike due to his personality. Most of the artists that have fallen off my play list have managed it through becoming someone I sort of found hard to take anymore. I loved Steve Earle but after seeing him twice in concert grew to dislike the guy. I still like his music but I rarely put it on. Funny how that works. Mostly, I don't need famous rich people to tell me how to think, act, how to vote or what to believe in and then scorn me if I disagree.

I feel the same about Neil Young.  Still pouting that all his political hippie dreams never came true.  I think he's even written a couple books about it too.  While guys like him and Earle get the faithful all fired up like preaching to the already converted, they manage to alienate a whole segment of would-be listeners.  But when you think your own opinion is that damn important, that's what you do.

Funny though, I never seem to tire of Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Jackson Browne, George Harrison and some others, especially the "Outlaw" progressive country artists from the 70's.  I take breaks from listening to these artists but always come back...

Two that I take breaks from for a few weeks and then come back to are Jackson Browne and The Band.
The Moody Blues / Justin Hayward I need a longer break, but then I like to get into some of the albums I haven't listened to in a long time. Funny though, I enjoy playing Justin Hayward, Jackson Browne and The Band songs about every time I pick up a guitar.

I'm pretty sure The Beatles copied that rooftop thing from the Jefferson Airplane.  Great video of it on Youtube, complete with Balin being hauled off by police and Grace dancing a really cute little jig barefoot.

Abba.  Boney M.  Fleetwood Mac - Rumors.  reason: played them to the saturation point when I was in my early twenties.  Don't mind listening to them once in a while today.

Any RAP group or artist after about 3 or 4 minutes.

I'm really tired of all new rock-bands. They make similar music for girls and silly people. They play rock music like it is pop-music. Bands like Maroon5, for example, are very popular but I think that these bands defame the name of the real rock-music!

Well said, Caleb. Plus, Young and many others (like Springsteen) are total hypocrites; they've become rich on the backs of the "little guys" (their fans) through pure capitalism, and yet they act like this same capitalism (and private land ownership, gun ownership, other freedoms) is evil and is someone else's fault. Pathetic.

Back to the main question, along with Young, I've grown weary of Jackson Browne's chronic depression in his songs (and his political rants like those already mentioned).  Yes, he's been through some hard times - haven't we all?

I'd also have to say, I love Tommy Emmanuel; he's incredibly, unbelievably talented, but after about 4-5 songs at 120 mph or bpm, I need a break! I got this way with some of Leo Kottke's stuff back in the day. Never had that problem with Chet or Doyle Dykes or some other fingerstyle players...

they just play the same hits on the radio all the time
they all have great b side songs that never get played

Took my son to see Roger Waters in Tampa a couple of weeks ago. I've never gotten tired of Pink FLoyd - but the political spew during the concert irritated me. I didn't pay good money to listen to a rich Brits opinions on the evils of America. Regardless of my stance on any of the issues.

BUT - otherwise great show. the girls on Great Gig in the Sky.... shivers!

Springsteen, Young, Drive By Truckers, and quite a few other insufferable D-bags that can't shut up and play. I've really enjoyed Jason Isbell's last couple of releases, but; he is rapidly heading into the same insufferable D-bag territory.

Um yes and no. As far as I can tell, he doesn't really espouse any political view other than despising postmodern progressives with no sense of humor which I find hard to disagree with. I've never heard him either tout or attack an individual politician or party, however. As I've said, I don't mind politics just partisan politics. You'd never see Fred doing this for instance.
