Title: Old RS4 pretty much finished.....
Post by: headsup on January 31, 2016, 02:31:46 PM
Well, it's been a long haul.
As I have posted previously, I was handed a busted body, with not a single piece of hardware on it.
It was once a friends guitar in the eighties, when he was in a punk rock band, then it was stolen, then it was stripped, and trashed.
Then I ended up with it by fluke.

Then I started looking for parts (impossible to find).
A call to John Jr a couple years ago in Vancouver was fruitless (no parts anywhere).
I finally found some old JCL hand wound pick-ups and controls.
Everything else was sourced from various locations, over time.

I made a couple "executive" decisions.
I chose to go with the gold hardware, to offset the stained flame maple a bit more.
I also put ebony buttons on the gold grover tuners.
I managed to find a couple cool ebony knobs, with a brass ring and pearl dot, which I like.(volume & tone).

The guitar stays in tune, the ebony fingerboard on the maple neck is perfectly straight.
The guitar is beautiful to play, and given it's severly abused history, it's a strong testement to just how good the builds were back then!

Looks good Kevin. Often we or I caution owners or potential owners of these guitars about the costs and availability of the parts. How much ( ballpark) time and $ would you say you have directed towards this project?

No denying the good bones!

yikes, as with any labour of love, there's no keeping track.

If I caculated hourly labour at what ever a repair shop charges, it would be a LOT, and truth be told, it's still not quite finished, I still need to to do some final buffing out of the finish, and tidy up the head stock a bit more...

Parts? maybe close to $500, Grovers, then ebony buttons, Floyd Rose, three original JCL pick ups.

Just the joy of "bringing it back to life" -like the 1971 beat up old Dreadnaught I found in a barn in NS.

Can't put a price on love.....
