Title: Great Guitar Players.
Post by: Caleb on August 11, 2015, 04:37:18 PM
It's no use talking about who "the best" is.  That's all subjective and based on personal preference, but the older I get the more I just appreciate fine musicianship and not just flashy playing.

An example of this is Marty Stuart and his band.  I've been watching his show for a couple years and am constantly impressed by how these fellows put on a show, and particularly how Marty plays guitar (and mandolin).  He always plays for the song, looks as if he's having fun, doesn't ever seem like he has anything to prove, and acts like he genuinely cares about the audience and putting on a great show.  That is musicianship and fine showmanship.

Who are some of your favorites?  And more importantly, why?

Any suggestions for a good sample that's available online?

Some of my favorites:    Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Chet Atkins, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Peter Greene on the electric side of things.
And Doc Watson, Neil Young, Nick Drake, and Django, and Fahey on acoustics
Rhythm guitar:    Keith Richards
Slide Guitar:  Ry Cooder, Roy Rogers, Derek Trucks, Duane Allman

These things are so darn subjective.    It's hard to pick a favorite or a "best" in any category

Terry Kath from the band Chicago,
I know hes more of an electric player but
he was a master of chords and taste.
He did some killer acoustic work as well, check out a song called Byblos
on youtube if you can.

A couple more excellent acoustic fingerstyle players: Doyle Dykes and El McMeen.

Dykes can be pretty flashy, but not in the same way as Tommy Emmanuel - who I also really like, but sometimes his energy level is over the top for me. But yes, a great player.

El McMeen just does some nice fingerstyle compositions - most if not all in an alternate tuning that I can't recall at the moment; C G C G C E or something like that.

This is a great list of guitar players and absolutely contains the majority of my all time favorites.  The one group that seems to be missing are some of the instrumental greats such as Tony Mottola, Wes Montgomery and George Benson, among others...

If you like Eric Johnson, check out Dimitar Nalbantov.  Another recent like for me are several of the guys that demo Eastwood and airline guitars.

Eric Johnson is a lot like David Gilmore to me, in that he has an unmistakable tone and original sound.  Several other players do too, like Carlos Santana, for example. That's a tough thing to do.

Another great player is Charlie Sexton from Austin, Texas. He tours a lot with Dylan as his lead player and has some fine solo records. His Under The Wishing Tree is just excellent and has a timeless sound.

I've seen Sexton with Bob a couple of times and have been duly impressed. I'm also a fan of the Arc Angels and have a couple of his CDs including "Under the Wising Tree" but honestly can't say I've been as impressed by his solo material. He's a fine player, however.  :thumb

Funny. In a similar vein, the late, great Canadian guitarist Jeff Healy came to Thunder Bay to play the Bluesfest, closing the final night. There was a massive crowd (for Thunder Bay) and Healy came out and played ... jazz trumpet all night. Folks, expecting searing electric guitar, walked out before it was over. Puzzling. I enjoyed it though. If anyone had read the promos, they should have expected  it.

Maybe guys like Johnson and Healy get bored with what they have done for so many years.  I remember when Ian Moore, another great guitar player from Texas, moved to the Seattle area and joined the folk scene there.  It left a lot of people scratching their heads.  I think he's in Austin again but I'm not sure what kind of music he's playing.

Another great player, and somewhat obscure, is a guy called Ross Childress.  He was the original lead guitarist for Collective Soul.  I always loved his playing - very melodic, tasteful, and still jaw-dropping from time to time, but he always played for the song and not just to show off licks.  Showing off licks is pretty boring to me.

I'm sure they do but if your name isn't Bob Dylan, not  giving the people what they've come to see and believe they've paid for is a dangerous career move, at the very least.
