Title: Your dream Larrivee custom guitar. What would it be?
Post by: L07 Shooting Star on March 17, 2015, 05:46:53 AM
USNavyChief recently posed this question:  "Just for fun, at the moment, what is your dream Larrivee custom shop guitar?"

After giving it some thought, my current desire would be for what I might call a "LS-50TSB custom".  I know this model doesn't exist at present, but we are in dreaming mode, right?

It would have a LS body.  It would have a select SA mahogany body, select sitka top, regular 14-fret unslotted neck but in a 25.0" scale length, model 50-style bindings, rosette, and appointments.  It would have tobacco sunburst, on the top only, with a semi-gloss finish on the entire guitar.  The headstock inlay would be a simple and elegant  image of a "shooting star" for which I would provide an example.  The tuners would be open-back Grover Sta-Tites.  The nut, saddle and bridge pins would be bone.

What about the rest of yous?

SD-60 with Italian Spruce top and Brazilian rosewood back.

SD-60 with Italian Spruce top and Brazilian rosewood back.

I was fortunate enough to play an SD-60 RWI on loan to me for about a week and MAN these models are LOUD but very responsive when played softly. Lots of great beautiful tones on these models.

Here's a picture of the one I tested.

Yea, my favorite guitars ever are the SD50 and 60.  You're absolutely right about how responsive they are when played softly.  I'm thinking a Brazilian one would give me ideal tone.  There IS one out there for sale but I would feel just awful if I spent $4,500 on it when I spent only $1,700 ea on the other two.

The L-shape is amazing but since I've got one already: I would love a sunburst-painted D-60 with Sitka spruce top and Brazilian rosewood back and sides. An abalone inlayed rosette, maybe some fancier inlays on the fretboard but with just the regular headstock. I might consider a slotted headstock though.

I have it...  PV-03.  I'd like to try the O-50's (with cutaway) to see if the different bracing changes things, but I'm really happy with the PV.

I am fortunate enough to have had my dream Larrivee custom made.My P-03 silver oak. If I were to ever have another made though, it would be a P-03 with a cedar top, bloodwood back and sides with bubinga binding and even the Larrivee Headstock Logo in Bubinga or Mahogany/ Maple like John Jr. did with the wildwood customs.

I'd like a Forum III cutaway in Italian spruce over grevilla robusta (silver oak) and scallop the braces please.  The rest with the same specs as the original Forum III   would equal my HOLY GRAIL :bgrin:

Six years ago today we were in Vancouver to pick up our Forum III's. When I first played mine I was very pleased and still am every time I play it. Yesterday I was playing a few songs on a Jumbo maple 12 string that I put new strings on etc. for a friend. Then I played the same song(s) on my Larrivee dread and the OO-40R. My wife was making comments as I played on each guitar.
Then I got the Forum III which is South American Mahogany and has an Italian spruce top. I only had played a little bit and my wife smiled and commented on the F-III having the best sound.

So after going on a fourteen Larrivee quest with Martins, Taylors and others thrown in, I have to say I have the "custom" Larrivee that I want and it was built in a factory which is now closed in Canada. Just a fine sounding , easy playing guitar with herringbone rosette and binding (purfling?). Simple yet elegant, thanks John and JCL for making the Forum III run, some of us feel these are special guitars indeed.

I should add that the new 40 series is very close to my dream Larrivee. Add a slot head, pyramid bridge and gloss finish and that would do it. But my OO-40R is close enough.

Since we are being allowed to dream.

OM-19  Black Walnut/Cedar

Being a -19 it would of course have one of Wendy's gorgeous inlays.   Wood bindings, but not maple, maybe koa, with matching heelcap and fretboard binding.

This changes for me so I will qualify by saying "at this time" my dream Larrivee would be:

LV-09
Silver Oak back & sides
Italian Spruce top
1 13/16th nut width
ebony binding on ebony fretboard
side markers on fretboard
open back tuners
no marks on fretboard or something simple at 12th fret
Maple Leaf inlay on the headstock
Rosewood binding
Rosette yet to be decided

I reserve the right to change my mind tomorrow.

Well I already have a few of my dream Larrivee acoustics, as well as a couple RS4 monterys, and an eighties fancy maple RS4,

HOWEVER, since you asked.

I'd love semi acoustic arch top electric, similar to the Gibson ES339,
except with 25.5 scale,
ML Gen 3 Humbuckers.
Tone pros, and all the good stuff in the Montereys,
ebony finger board with RS4 inlays, on flame maple neck
flame maple back & sides, spruce top if available,
solid bock through the body,
 antique violin burst,
and of course the proud name "Larrivee" on the headstock.
 Schaller tuners
did I miss anything? oh ya, maple or kA bindings.

just whip that up in the shop boys, and send me the invoice.

In regards to these archtop models from Larrivee that keep getting mentioned:  Would that be a laminate body or all wood?  Being a Larrivee I would imagine all wood.   If all wood then it would be hand carved no doubt.  Wouldn't that require a learning curve of a few years to master?  A few to say the least.  Larrivee would have to spend countless hours in the R&D department or bring in an expert in the archtop world to make it for them (using Larrivee specs of course).  I guess what I am getting at is this.  Is this an endeavor that Larrivee would want to undertake?  If they would do it I have no doubt it would be done right.  And there is the rub.  To be done right would mean (in my limited, feeble mind) taking a few years before the first ones would be available.  Am I way off base or is that a fair assessment?

Title: Re: Your dream Larrivee custom guitar. What would it be?

I think that Mike is on to something here.
Building archtop guitars with carved tops more closely resembles violin making than flat top acoustic guitars.
Violins... and mandolins!
Larrivee has experience with carving mandolins and this is the knowledge and experience that a luthier would draw upon in building archtop guitars.

I believe the OP is about a dream guitar?

as in "dream" being operative. No point in throwing cold water on our face to wake us up.
Being good friends with Oskar Graf, one of the best guitar builders in North America, and who meticulously carves his tops and backs from 1 inch slabs of top grade Spruce and Maple for his arch tops, I am more than aware of the craftsmanship, time and work involved, as well as the near 20 K price tag.

I was merely responding to the OP.
I do notice however, Collings builds a guitar similar to my dream, and they sell for around 5 k. Laminate.

Woops!  Completely missed the carved mandolins in my thinking process.  So there is some experience there.  Didn't mean to throw cold water on anything.  Everyone go back to sleep!    :bgrin:

Plus the memories of Bonnie smiling as I was playing, (probably the song MOVING MOUNTAINS by Justin Hayward) were a nice warm, glowing moment for me.
I  think I'll play Moving Mountains now.

LS 10 Florentine cutaway with a Manzer wedge.

Spruce top, curly maple body, ebony or other dark-wood binding with abalone inlay like 30 year anniversary model.

A great pickup.

Fast neck.

If Larrivée wouldn’t mind copying Bob, an 8 string baritone would be most excellent. Venetian cutaway. They pick the woods. L body style. Forearm bevel. Old school clear pickguard.

I doubt that Jean has built a guitar "solo" since the early years. Now he's going in so many different directions I'd think he'd never get it done. And I don't know that you'd get any nicer guitar than one of the current 10 series or higher models.

Since we are being allowed to dream.

OM-19  Black Walnut/Cedar

Being a -19 it would of course have one of Wendy's gorgeous inlays.   Wood bindings, but not maple, maybe koa, with matching heelcap and fretboard binding.

Since this thread is fairly old, although seeing new life, I am going to change my answer to:

OM-19 Black Walnut/Cedar with series -40 bracing.

Oh, and no pickguard.

Back in the 1900's I had the most wonderful L model with the eagle and serpent headstock inlay, and really beautiful fretboard inlays. After pining for another for the last few decades, I wanted to order one. Then out of the sky....a MINT (and I mean literally vaulted!) 1982 Victoria one appeared for sale 4 blocks from my home!!!! I ran to call, ran to the bank ( bigtime overdraft...but WT#), and I GOT IT. As I write it is waiting on my lap to fill the room with more gorgeous sounds.
An L-19 that I will never let out of my sight....ever....ever. Its going with me. Period.
