Title: Got My First Larrivee (blackwood)
Post by: sc morris on June 27, 2003, 02:49:56 AM
hello everyone.  i just got my first larrivee....it's a d03 blackwood and i'm really loving it.  this is also my first post on this board.  i'll be around from time to time.  i chose larrivee after lots and lots of research and playing different guitars.  i really feel that they're the best value in all solid wood guitars....and the tone is very unique compared to other makers.

anyone else got a blackwood?

They are somewhat rare, but do have a wonderful tone!
And you're right, the best value in Acoustics!

What does the Blackwood tone sound like compared to other tonewoods?  Never heard a Blackwood guitar

The blackwood tone is real hard to descibe in words. Its a type of koa,but compared to other satin finished L bodies, that's what we see the most of at my store,it has a beefier bottom end.Which I just realize doesn't help you understand the tone.Let me use this scale
Mahogany brite balanced tone
Koa like mahogany but with more overtone's
blackwood like koa but more beef to the bottom
rosewood sultry dark tone
this is just the satin finish stuff

i've never played a koa guitar....but i love the look of them.  but i've also heard that blackwood is very similar to koa.  i am really enjoying my d03 bw.  i played it all weekend long.  during one jam session with a freind and his martin dm......i didn't even have to tune up after 4 hours of playing. now that's a well built guitar!!!

I may do that.  How fast do they usually move?  If I'm in a position to buy one, it will be mid-August.

(I really like #933)
