Title: OM-40R Custom Build progress
Post by: USNavySeniorChief on February 26, 2015, 10:28:35 AM
Well, I figured since I have some time to spare in the next few weeks, I'll start this thread on the OM-40R that Jean,Matt and the rest of his talented team of guitar craftsmen graciously decided to build for me.

I'll spare (for now) the details on how I came to meet Jean and his crew!

The Basic OM-40R Specs can be found at: http://www.larrivee.com/instruments/acoustics/40/OM40RW/om40rw.php

I was going to go all out and order an elaborately decorated guitar but Matt really placed some sense back into my "thick noggin" and wallet by suggesting the built to be "simple & elegant."

So with that I went for the following upgrade:

-  Select top grade Rosewood back and side
-  Select top grade wide grained Spruce for the top
-  Flamed maple binding
-  Torch headstock inlay (slotted)
-  Gloss finish (whole guitar)
-  Abalone style 09 rosette
-  Upgraded tuners
-  Signed label

O.K. enough said.... here we go:

Here's the first picture I took on the build. (Jean showing me the spruce top) I'll add more pix the next time I stop by to see them.  :cheers

I love the JCL emblem they inlay on some headstocks... was that an option?   BobW...  :guitar

That'll be a keeper. Thanks for letting us in to see. The Larrivees prefer to use wide grain spruce. I have one...they produce great tone.

What style of headstock?
12 or 14 fret?

That torch inlay looks really good on a slot head.

The headstock will be the standard non slotted square OM-40 style. 14 Fret.

If I were commissioning a custom, I'd pick something other than maple binding.  Maybe koa.

Maple has too much contrast for my taste, I prefer more subdued.

Yes. That's his new hybrid design. I believe he mentioned that they still do some final brace shaving or adjustments to customize the sound of the top prior to installation.

Larrivee's are really top notch when it comes to their signature sound and their instrument build quality control.

Here's a side by side comparison on Martin vs. Larrivee's top bracing style on their 40 series.

I think I'll request Jean to not install the pickguard for now. You're correct about the top. I was going to go for an Adi top until Jean showed me his stash of Canadian Sitka!

After speaking with Matt and after seeing the choices wood that Jean had To offer, I didn't even bother to ask them. Jean "schooled" me on what I needed for this guitar after seeing and hearing me play the sample OM 40R in his shop. Me had no choice but to follow the "guitar zen master" on this one. LOL!

Presented this plaque I made for Jean today. I think it's only fitting to put together something personal to the person who's building me a very personal guitar.

I built it from woods that I got while I was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Cuban Granadillo and old growth Cuban mahogany.

Lovely thread, nice to see Jean looking as enthusiastic about his builds as he was when I ordered my first one from him, way back in 1972. ( back then he built 2 at a time-in Toronto)

Of course we were both much younger then, but reading this, still makes me proud to still be playing his guitars, after all these years.

Headstock update.

I just recently upgraded for a slotted headstock similar to the one pictured below. Only difference is, mine will have a rosewood veneer to match the back and sides of the OM-40.

BTW. I drooled a little while posting this. LOL!

I saw and played this guitar today (OOO KOA) and was blown away! Out of respect to the future owner I'll refrain from posting the rest of the pictures I got from them. If this guitar finds its way to a current or future forum member.., you're gonna get a gorgeous and great sounding guitar!

Just for fun, at the moment, what is your dream Larrivee custom shop guitar?

Title: Re: OM-40R Custom Build progress
Post by: broKen on March 17, 2015, 04:30:28 AM
I guess if I ever saw a twelve fret L with 1 13/16" neck, sitka top and lacewood or walnut body, preferably lacewood since my SD has walnut, I just might buy it. Gloss looks nice but to flashy and impractical for man of my skill and caliber. I think I might come up with some headstock inlay befitting a simple, hardworking, blue collar, spiritual man that I am...or was. Getting older and slowing down some. Anyway, my dream guitar has changed some since the last time this topic was discussed.

Title: Re: OM-40R Custom Build progress
Post by: USNavySeniorChief on March 17, 2015, 04:43:07 AM
@ broKen, I have not played a lacewood Larrivee yet. But I have a feeling it won't be for long. The 12 fret Koa OOO I tried today was one of the most resonant small bodied guitar I played in years. It surprised me because of it being new, the top should normally feel a little "stiff" but for some reason the guitar sounded very lively.

Title: Re: OM-40R Custom Build progress
Post by: broKen on March 17, 2015, 04:51:29 AM
I've not played a koa backed guitar, nor a lacewood/silver oak, but I like what I've heard. I'd like an L but  I've become so accustomed to twelve fretter's I don't think I'd like the longer neck.

Collings -OM2H - LR Baggs Lyric
Martin Custom OMC - Fishman Aura
Martin 000-28 EC - LR Baggs Lyric
Martin HD 28V - LR Baggs Anthem
Rainsong OM - Fishman prefix plus T
Taylor GS Mini all koa - Taylor Expression system

Got another update from Jean today. The slothead neck is almost done and they are going to stain the mahogany to closely match the rosewood back. The body is prep for paint and Jean informed me that's the part that will take the longest.

Baggs Lyric all the way. In my opinion the least invasive.

Jean also informed me that this guitar is historically his first Custom ordered OM-40R in this configuration.

I've honestly been more happy with Fishman than anyone else, especially the no cut versions with the hidden soundhole mounted controls like the Matrix Infinity. (I have one in my Taylor 12)

K & K can sound good (I have one in my Rainsong)  er... my 6-string Rainsong.  It often needs a DI box to sound good though.  An external pre-amp would be better.  Even with the DI box matching the impedance, the soundboard guy usually has to really turn up the gain on the K&K, so it's less than ideal if swapping instruments on the same channel.

Title: Re: OM-40R Custom Build progress
Post by: USNavySeniorChief on March 28, 2015, 03:08:28 AM
I've heard that about the K&k's also. Great pickup but it takes time to dial in with the right EQ (Venue DI). I also have an Aura Spectrum DI that I use quite often on my undersaddle pickups and have gotten great results. I may go with the Lyric because of its non-invasive install and ops.

Hey Cheif,
IMO every one deserves one perfect guitar with no PU installed.  If the guitar has the perfect acoustic sound and is the perfect build why mess with it.  Buy a good condenser mic if you are going to play it for crowds.  I have one guitar like that and I will never put a PU in it.  If I was going to buy a new guitar for blasting away through an amp or PA I would buy a pro series Tak. (Oh man, forgive me I have sinned, I am bad, horrible, honest? )
Dave

Points taken on no pickup and condenser mic route. I'm also thinking about waiting a few before installing one on the guitar (if ever). Taks are great guitars also. Years back when I was stationed in Japan I had one with the cool tubes preamp.

I like the stain used on the neck as well. It is a fine looking guitar, but I was thinking the abalone rosette makes it look like an OM-60. I really don't want to sound critical about such a special Larrivee, just think it would look more like a 40 with a rope rosette as well.
      Just thoughts.

Well an OM-60 would not have the slotted headstock nor the torch inlay.  Though I agree with you that it's a fine looking guitar and all the best to USNavySeniorChief.  Well done Chief!

That is some nice gloss, I had to do a double take when I saw the crack on the back, then I realized it was in the concrete.
Tap the picture and zoom in, nice resolution.

I'm going to attempt to describe the sound of this Larrivee as an OM cannon! Very pleasant and balanced tone with rich harmonics to boot. Sweet highs and lows that responds well to pretty much any style of playing. I mainly play fingerstyle but I find that the top really responds well using a pick as well. The OM 40 bracing, wide grained spruce, East Indian rosewood, slotted headstock & the overall design of the guitar really worked out well. But I truly believe Jean, Matt and their crew is the main reason why this guitar sounds so special. And for that, I will always be greatfull for their talents and hard work at Larrivee guitars!

That is a beauty - I echo everyone else here:

 :nice guitar:

For those here asking about Larrivee's "Custom Shop" the Chief's guitar provides the answer!  :thumb

Looks beautiful!, What a thrill it must be to be so closely invloved in the building of your guitar.
I went back to your first posting on this guitar, because it opens up the debate (for me) on the use of language, regarding the woods.

"select" rosewood-what exactly does "select" mean?
Same with "wide grained top", I still haven't been satisfied with what ever explanations are going around as to the top grain.
Once upon a time, wide grained was considered "inferior" and the more "select" tops has perfect and very tight grain, with cross grain markings.
Perfectly quarter sawn, so there was a lot of eye appeal, when it was finished in gloss.

Is the "select wide grain" the new trend towards the "better" sounding/looking guitar?
If so, does that make the less expensive models made back when the wider grain was less appealing, more appealing guitars to some?

-  Select top grade Rosewood back and side
-  Select top grade wide grained Spruce for the top
-  Flamed maple binding
-  Torch headstock inlay (slotted)
-  Gloss finish (whole guitar)
-  Abalone style 09 rosette
-  Upgraded tuners
-  Signed label

O.K. enough said.... here we go:

Here's the first picture I took on the build. (Jean showing me the spruce top) I'll add more pix the next time I stop by to see them.  :cheers

You know, they say "select spruce top" in the official description of some Chinese all-plywood guitars ;)
