Title: Which Artist Are You Most Influenced By?
Post by: hatman on January 08, 2004, 10:17:41 AM
I think I have probably been most influenced by Eric Clapton.
It starts with his involvement in Cream, Derrick and the Dominos, etc. Then progressing through his years as an independent artist, his playing with his blues greats, playing both electric and acoustic.
I have only been really playing guitar for about four years, but have almost always had a guitar around to plink A,E,&G chords on.
But, I have always loved music. Particuarly blues and blues-rock music.
My credit to E.C. as a major influence is because he has been there all these years putting out music that I have been able to relate to since my very early years.
I don't think I try to play like him really. And I sure don't sound like him. But, I think in some ways we have the same love of the music.
Does that make sense. I hope so.
This is not an invitation to flame someone elses pick or choice, but hopefully to share our inspirations.
I'm looking foward to your responses.

First song I learned was Little Red Riding Hood (Sam the Sham). Influences, in time order:
Beatles, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Loggins and Messina, Johnny Cash, Kristopherson, Riders in the Sky, Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, a bit of Rory Block, a bit of Lindsay Buckingham....still being influenced, but not much by new stuff.

Wow, looking at all these artists and influences is so cool to me.
I keep saying to myself: Yes, Yes, and Yes that one too.
Isn't it interesting how we are influenced and/or effected by so many different things in life.
One of the things that still surprises me from time to time is when I hear a particular song or a particular artist and am almost transported back to a time or incident in my life. There are songs that represent different eras of my life. Heck, maybe that's a topic for another thread.
Barry. :D

That's one of the best (and sometimes worst) things about music--its ability to  transport us to where we were and what we were doing when we heard it! I often wondered if everyone's life has a soundtrack, or if it was just me...

Title: Which Artist Are You Most Influenced By?
Post by: hatman on January 13, 2004, 10:36:05 AM
And there is another thing.
Even a lot of our language, our phrasing, sayings, are influenced by songs.
"What a long strange trip it's been" is a very real discription of my life that I relate to and does about the best job of saying a lot in as few words.
It's probably been said in many different ways that are just as descriptive, but it is the one I relate to.
Just thoughts. I guess I am in a reflective mood lately. Lots of changes in my life, and I think this probably is bringing them on.
Barry.

I have a wide variety of influences. Growing up a first generation MTV  viewer, I was exposed to alot. I was influenced by the first ladies that I saw with a guitar..... Wendy Melvoin of Prince and the Revolution, Nancy Wilson of Heart, Wynonna Judd. Then later, I came to admire the poetic style of Ani Difranco and Jewel.  Then I discovered that most of the female gutiarist that I admire all noted someone named Joni Mitchell as an influence on them. WOW!!!!!  What a fanominal talent!!!!  No one does it like Joni!!!  I am still in awe of her.  I am greatly inspired by soul music of the 70's.  I love Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Donny Hathaway, Roberta Flack, and Curtis Mayfield.   I liek the new soul movement that is happening now. Alicia Keys, India Arie, Jill Scott, and Lauryn Hill.   Real music that sends a positive message, and can really touch the soul. With all that being said, Praise and Worhip is my reason for being....therefor, Jesus is my biggest and main influence.  In the words of Kirk Franklin  " He is the reason why I sing"

my playing is HEAVILY influenced by SRV....pretty original, huh??  but that seems typical of Texas guitar players.

I was/am also very influenced by Clapton.

Although my guitar playing doesn't even compare to their's, it's still fun to try.

I  see many that I have in my collection.  CSN, and Y were the best early influence, along w/Beatles and E.C. but also message and lyrically, the Moody Blues. Then I "discovered" jazz, or more so, the jazz fusion stuff;  Pat Metheny was/is and may always be my favorite influence, along with the giant leap that Michael Hedges took us with his treatment.  I say, when people ask   , that my sound is an emulation of Metheny and Crosby.
Most recently, Alex DeGrassi is getting a lot of air-time too.

Oh, and while we are juggling this thread,
It is sometimes really spooky where a song will transport you from your past.
Even seemingly ordinary instances are super-flashed when the music hits the hallways of Memory!  Whether sad, poignant, happy, or "altered" I wouldnt want to not have them.
p.s. I had Metheny playing in the Birthing Room when my kids were born!

naboz - another Moodies fan! My first album, when I was a kid, was a hand-me-down copy of On The Threshold Of A Dream. To this day, they too are my most treasured artists. And Pat Metheny was also the first concert I saw when I was about 6. He is the reason I picked up the guitar. How do you like them apples... very cool.

I still keep up with everything they do, but I've always been a Mike Pinder kinda guy  ;)  .

Sounds like we have similar tastes, thems cool apples!  Now I am trying to place your age (sorry), as you went to Metheny at 6yrs.  I have seen him almost every time he has been near me in Mich.  And The Group's first album I took w/me to Cal. in 1979.

At least in regards to playing the guitar, my musical tastes are of slower, mellow songs like Jim Croce's Time in a Bottle or House of the Rising Sun (don't know who wrote that song)...i think i'd like to learn some Beetles songs like Here Comes the Sun, Let it Be.  These are the artists/songs not chosen for their technical prowess but for the way they make me feel and are therapeudic to the mind and soul...

I am pretty new to the guitar (8 months or so) but the music I enjoy the most (and subsequently like to play the most is) is the dreaded Dave Matthews.  I also really like Chris Isaak and have tryed to learn some of his stuff.  I have also tried my hand at some Bowie,Beattles, Stone Temple Pilots, Tom Petty, Blue Oyster Cult and others.

When the music bug hit me first in the 60's...it was the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Glen Miller & Count Basie (my dad was a huge Big Band fan)...then in the 70's it turned to the Eagles, Moody Blues, Rush, Scorpions & Led Zeppelin. Then in the 80's, Phil Keaggy, Randy Stonehill, Rez Band and Petra...the 90's it was The Cult, Metallica, & Scorpions...Nowadays I can't get enough of listening to Michael Hedges, Doyle Dykes, Scorpions and I still enjoy listening to the acoustic stuff Zeppelin did. Matt Redman is a big influence now as well.

Naboz mentioned about listening to a song that transports us to the past...for some reason Jim Croce's music does that to me...as much as it is beautiful music, I seem to get sad for some reason and can't listen to it without my eyes tearing up...LOL, and for that same reason I get weird feelings when I listen to Eddie Money...seems everytime the guy had a hit, some gal was breaking up with me.

The older I get, the more musical discoveries I seem to make. Impossible to narrow it down to even just a few. I went through an obssessive Zep faze during the eighties, Beck, Hendrix, Allman Brothers, etc. Been really into Clapton over the past couple of years in particular, as well as the blues guys (Guy, Kings, Bloomfield, Collins, J. Vaughan, ......). Also getting more into R. Thompson, Prine, Waits, John Martyn, etc. Getting away from guitars, I love Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sinatra, ...

Oh yeah, can't forget RAY CHARLES.

Some great artists listed here.  Poki mentioned Here Comes The Sun, which is one of my favorite George Harrison (with the Beatles) tunes, and it is surprisingly easy to play.  Once you figure out the capo position, it is mostly open chords.  There are a few quicker runs in the break, but mostly pretty easy.  For years and years I wanted to play that one, but never tried because it sounded hard.  One day I opened up Acoustic Guitar Mag, and they had a version that was pretty close, and pretty easy.  That got me into a lot more songs that I had never bothered to try (blackbird, dear prudence).  As you can tell I like the Beatles.  I also really like Neil Young, Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, and most blues rock.  That is why I like the guitar so much, you can always learn something new, and there are tons of great songs that are fairly easy to pick up.  Even when I get too busy to play real regular, I can go back and it is like resuming a conversation that never really ended.  Anyway, thanks for posting these great influences.  Now if only I had talent!  Jason.

P.S., Chris, how did the top polishing come out?

My influences are a mish-mash of conflicting types of music. I may have no taste - I can't tell. Sometimes I try to draw influence from music that is not necessarily guitar-oriented. I prefer to focus on melodies and rhythms over technique. I rely on tab, play by ear and generally look to get the 'gist' of the musical arrangement. Call it what you will, but I'm just doing this for personal enjoyment for now. Here's my list:

Jimmy Page
Randy Rhodes
Mark Knopfler
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Peter Gabriel
Cat Stevens

BTW - I've recently discovered fingerstyle guitar and and am currently obsessed with Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, Laurence Juber and Martin Taylor as well.

For fingerpicking, Mississippi John Hurt.  I used to wear out the recordings learning his songs.
For flatpicking, without a doubt, Dan Crary.  His style of playing fiddle tunes and Celtic numbers just blew me away first time I heard him.  Of course, Tony Rice set my mind to thinking a bit, too!

QuoteP.S., Chris, how did the top polishing come out?
Jason,  after getting the guitar I decided I liked it the way it was and decided not to polish it.  Like you told me when it first arrived, the top has a kinda vintage look to it and I didn't want touch it.  The rw is also beautiful and I decided that since I was happy with how it looked there wasn't any need to change it.

Neil Young, Maybelle Carter & Dave Alvin.

I like guitarists who are good but not so good that I could never figure out how to play their songs.

Dave Alvin is more known for his electric guitar playing (with the Blasters) but his acoustic playing is pretty amazing.  Check out his CD's "King of California" or "Public Domain".  He must have listened to a lot of Carter Family stuff because his acoustic style is a variation on Carter picking using a thumb pick and index finger.

First and foremost, James Taylor is my constant source of inspiration.  What a suprise huh?  I'm sure we must have similar personalities.  His music speaks to me, it's downhome and bittersweet in that JT sort of way.  For me, he's one of the best songwriters I've ever heard

Roger Waters, especially the Amused to Death album.

On the blues front, Robert Lockwood Jr.

I've been influenced by all the usual suspects, but the single greatest one would be Jerry Garcia.
He has had the greatest effect on so many different levels, since I first started listening to him back in 1971. Lets see:  I got into bluegrass and traditional music ( which until then I always hated) by listening to his work on Old & In the Way.   The Dead were doing regular acoustic sets during their performances WAY before that little thing called "MTV Unplugged"
His guitar phrasing & sound always was musical & emotional to my ears.  And, unlike most "Rock" players, his solos were always improvised & different.  Sometimes they worked, sometimes they crashed & burned.
Most people don't realize it, but he regularly changed his guitar sound, from year to year, sometimes drastically.  If you are a big fan, and a tape-collector ( like myself)  you can even roughly date any random live tape just by the sound of the guitar.  Its a cool party-trick :)
It was truley sad to see him start slipping so much during his later years.
Aug 9th is the anniversity of his death.
Also happens to be my birthday.

Regards
Dan Mahoney

Electric players:

Trevor Rabin (I love how his solos always make me feel happier once I've heard them), David Gilmour, Eric Johnson, and yes, The Edge (I got my first callouses cribbing off old school U2 albums.  I think I figured out 'Gloria' in about 30 seconds and it was such a rush seeing as I had never had a lesson.), A pretty unknown guy by the name of Henry Frayne (his group is called Lanterna - very haunting cool new twist on reverby guitar) another guy like that called Ric Hordinski (used to be in Over the Rhine, now is solo as 'Monk'), Doc Powell, Adrian Belew (the Twang Bar King), Andy Summers before his stuff just went south (X Y Z was the record that just tanked), Fripp, (Fripp's stuff with Andy Summers is killer - find it in your local record store's cutout bins), well, the list could go on forever.  I can't really play like any of these guys, but I sure pay attention to their sound.

Acoustic Players:

Don Ross, Billy McGlaughlin, Chet, the dudes from Guster (keep a watch out for their show on Austin City Limits - I know that this is cliche'd, but these guys are songwriters and performers of Beatles quality - recently toured with John Mayer and put him to shame, and he's a not too bad pop song writer/performer), Jars of Clay's Dan Haseltine, Jerry Douglas

For those who like Metheny, you might also like Mick Goodrick, another "Boston" jazz guitar player.  "In Passing" is an amazing cd.  The playing is superlative, yet understated, and the compositions, all original, are subtle with complex harmonic and melodic paternings.

Can't believe it took until Rusty Chicken for someone to mention Bruce Cockburn (a Larrivee player for many years, BTW; now he plays Manzer guitars; she worked for/learned from Larrivee).

Bruce Cockburn's songwriting and playing just pulled me in!  The others:

David Wilcox
Dylan
Neil Young
Johnny Cash (!)
Buddy Miller
Paul Simon

Instrumental/Acoustic:
Chris Proctor
Doyle Dykes
Chet
Parkening
Sharon Isbin
LA Guitar Quartet
Kaki King
Preston Reed
Hedges
Ralph Towner

Instrumental/Jazz/Electric:
(Canadian) Ed Bickert (THE BEST!)
Danny Gatton
Martino
Larry Carlton
Keaggy (also his acoustic side)

Misc./The Rest:
SRV
Johnny Winter
The Holmes Brothers (check 'em out!)
Chris Duarte
Ronnie Earl
Luther Allison
Robben Ford

Plus all the other obvious ones: Beatles, CCR, Zep, Yes, Police, Allman Bros., Atlanta Rhythm Section, AWB, Queen, Buddy Guy, Clapton, B.B., Freddie, Muddy; yeah, it could just go on forever...

Koamon, like most everyone, was overtly or subliminally influenced by The Beatles and Dylan. Beyond that, I would have to say the older acoustic music of Stephen Stills, James Taylor, Neil Young, Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell.

Through the years it keeps changing... Early years was EVH, Joe Perry, Pat Travers... Then it moved to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Johnson, Micheal Hedges, Joe Satriani... Nowadays, it's Dave Matthews. His guitar playing is great but I really like his songwriting and lyrical abilities!!

Neil Young
Gordon Lightfoot
Joni Mitchell
Richie Havens

I'm a strummer, mostly.  I like lots and lots of others, but as far as actually influencing the way I play, these would probably top the list.

Usually it depends on what I am currently listening to. That turns into what I'm humming and that turns into what I play (sorta). Some artists stay constant cuz they're too good to put down for too long. Lyle Lovett, old Dan Fogelberg, Allison Krauss, old Billy Joel, David Grier, Tommy Emmanuel, Van Morrison. The list grows longer all the time...

The first two songs I learned were Gloria and House of the Rising Sun.  But the first artist I tried to emulate was Donovan....Catch the Wind, Josie, Universal Soldier, Colours....those taught me how to pick and  strum.....and that I didn't have a voice that was good for anything but singing in the shower, or late at night when everyone else was asleep.  Then, I moved on to Neil Young, who taught me that I didn't need a good voice to sing.  I bought my first new guitar and got serious about playing because my girlfriend loved "Cowgirl in the Sand".....I have no idea where she is now, but I still have that old guitar (among others) and I still love playing Cowgirl.......ain't life sweet.

Gordon Lightfoot; Simon & Garfunkel (& Paul Simon, solo); Peter, Paul & Mary; Arlo Guthrie & Pete Seeger; Michael Card; Cat Stevens; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; early John Denver (don't laugh!); early Nitty Gritty Dirt Band; mostly folk & acoustic stuff. I love a lot of 70s rock stuff, but don't play it on the guitar.

I'm beginning to appreciate artists like John Denver more and more. Forget trying to be 'heavy'. Fun songs and light romance songs are going to have the continued appeal.

Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King for that genre

Leo Koetke for his musicianship

Tom Paxton for the '60's style folk songs

Bob Dylan for wonderful songs (better for the covers than Blind Boy Grunt himself).

Sweet Baby James Taylor

CSNY for great guitar playing and vocals
