Just saw the new edition of Rolling Stone.....Dylan on the cover...the featured article is the top 70 Dylan songs, to celebrate his 70th birthday. #1..Like a Rolling Stone
If you could just listen to one Folk Singer - would it be DYLAN :?
He is certainly the most famous and still goin at 70
Or would you choose someone else of less renown like LIGHTFOOT ( my choice) What happened to the recent thread on LIGHTFOOT was it removed :?
Anyway no debating the greatness and vast influence of Bobby but if you could only have one :? :? :?

For me, it would be Donovan.
If I could have one it would be Bob Dylan.
Did Love Minus Zero/No Limit make the list?
It seems like yesterday Loudon Wainwright released a song for Bob's 50th.
Wait, can I change my answer? Loudon Wainwright might be my choice if I had to have one.

:thumb snap!
With Martin Carthy a close second.
Dylan might be third...I'd have to think about it.
Happy Birthday Bob. I won't debate Dylan today. I just listen to the music. Everybody seems to overlook the music.

:+1: I agree, I just simply have to make special mention of the way Guy Davis does "Sweetheart like you" though from the album "A Nod to Bob" in honour of Bob's 60th birthday.
:winkin:
It's hard to think of a folk great who hasn't covered a Dylan song at some point. I think that is pretty telling.
Who says he's a folksinger anyway? Not his sunburst strat. Not Pete Seeger and his axe either.

27 of 30 on the quiz. I missed the rapper, the punk band and another one. That's alright ma, I'm a freakin' Dylan geek.

I missed 2 out of the first 3 so I quit. Now, if they had asked why the pumps didn't work, I could have answered. :roll

I got the first 20 odd without an error then I got cocky and started using my right brain. :laughin:
Saw Neil at Massey Hall the other night. Played solo. Acoustic and electric. Le Noise. I think I'd have to go with Neil as the one musician/songwriter/folkie/not a folkie/guitarist/artisit/singer/performer type person.

Tastes vary but even Neil knows who set the pace.

So the title of the topic is very apt.
Joyce, your question is hard to answer because there are too many variables. The problem I have with picking just one is how does one define "folk" music or a "folk" artist? What about Joan Baez? Have any of you listened to her first recordings where she does traditional british "folk" ballads? What an incredible singing voice. I would put her near the top if you are narrowing the choice to the best singers. I would put Donovan up near the top also. If you are talking about performers that have had the greatest influence then Dylan tops the list for me.
Then there are the groups. Peter, Paul and Mary. The Highwaymen. Kingston Trio were very popular at one time, etc.
Interesting thread in any case.
Peace, Kurt
