Title: Best Guitar Builder/ Country
Post by: abalone at last on March 20, 2011, 07:25:01 AM
Okay heres a chance to test your guitar knowledge and geography at the same time. Pick a country..then name the best guitar builder in that country. Small shops are fine as long as you think they are the best. I'll go first.................U.S.A.. martin guitars.......reasons: oldest company, best bass tone, uses wood conservation. ........ I'd love to hear from the U.K., Japan, Europe, Down Under, Eastern Europe, etc... Lets hear your fav guitar builders!! :thumbsup

There are so many today--everywhere.  But for acoustic steel string, I would say Larrivee in both the USA and Canada.

Sellers - Grand Fenwick.

Genius' who don't get their due from the world until it's too late. Passing time grants perspective, though people don't consider this when marketing blitzes are in full swing.

based on what i  have had a chance to play and/or hear closely;

UK builder - Sobel
Irl builders -  Lowden / Mcllroy (even tie - depending upon what you want)
Cdn builders - Paragon /Morgan / Webber (even tie - depending upon what you want)
US builders - Baranik / Franklin / Olson (even tie - depending upon what you want)

There are many more that i have not had a chance to directly experience, so therefore don't comment upon ;-)

no, have not had the chance to try a larrivee electric but would love to to compare it to my burny les paul. have read nothing but glowing reviews here and elsewhere. my brother has a tom anderson classic strat and that guitar opened my eyes to the small builders and what is possible if you build for quality and not a price point.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but it will be several years and 20 or so more guitars before I think I build one that doesn't embarrass me to have people see face to face. But, I look at it this way, Jean, Bob, Richard, all those famous guys, they started out with a lot of desire and not much else really and look where they took guitar building. I hope for a slightly different end result than the guys with big factories, but someday I do hope to build a guitar that my friend Junior will want to own. For me, when I build a guitar that Junior wants, I know I will have built something special!

Spira? He makes a nice mandolin. I know he makes guitars. I've just never played one.

Canada - Tony Karol. I have one of his OM's and it's a very nice guitar. He only builds a dozen, or so per year.

Someone to Czech  :winkin: out in the Czech Republic is Roman Zlajicek.
He runs the Rozawood shop.
He is known in Central Europe as a master luthier.
I have one of his Octave Mandolins and it's the gem of my collection.

From my shores I would say

Hans Van Den Berg - He built my Custom OM and the Classical Baritone in another thread.

Marc Maingard   http://www.guitarsafrica.co.za/

Foster Van Der Merwe   http://www.fosterguitarworks.com/

Ian Corr   http://corrguitars.co.za/

And I'm sure there are others I don't know about.

Best of all Countries:  Raymond Kraut, Eugene, Oregon . USA

http://www.krautguitars.com/

He builds 12 guitars per year - each guitar is a unique piece of artwork. Best craftmanship, very responsive, very sensitive and a fretwork...

Best German Builders:

Wilhelm Henkes und Rudolph Blazer

They build more traditional steel strings in a perfect way...

amazing that when you always ask those on either side of the aisle you get strong opinions with strong divisions. but equally amazing is if you post so that you include all and respect each as separate but equal you'll never win with the same narrow mindset. yee haw.

I'm going to throw Sergie de Jonge in Canada (http://www.dejongeguitars.com/).

What about Spain, people?  A difficult one, no doubt, but surely someone has a thought or two...

Lots of great builders working today, but one luthier that's at the top of his game is Ervin Somogyi from California.

You mean like luthier Sheldon Crabknuckle, from Punkydoodle Corners? So obscure, his guitars so rare and refined no one has ever seen or played one. Nobody is worthy or ever will be.

Seriously.  What's it cost for one his guitars?  $25k?  Jeff Traugott, $26500!?  I doubt any of these instruments sound $24000 "better" than any Larrivee I've owned.

LOL,not saying that a hack guitar player such as myself could ever afford one,or that I would even buy one if I could....just saying that he does excellent work... and his guitars sound very, very good...they start at $30,000.00 by the way and he has a two year waiting list

BTW , I've always been a huge fan of your playing Denis....I imagine that you could make a cigar box strung with rubber bands sound good...so no need for you to ever spend $30K on a guitar  :bgrin:

Thanks.  I know I'm not exactly Tommy E or anything but it's always nice to hear someone likes what I'm doing.

I'm pretty happy with the guitars I've got right now.  I would love to try a $30000 guitar but who knows, after that I might want a $30000 guitar!
