Title: 03 series headplate veneer?
Post by: Mr_LV19E on March 16, 2010, 03:42:38 PM
What material is that black stuff Larrivee uses as a head plate veneer on the 03 series?

Ebony but they've started using rosewood on some guitar lately

I have ebony on my LV-19 and it looks like wood, neither my OM or LS look like wood, they are black but have no grain pattern to them. Is it some form of ebonoid (plastic)?

I think the ebony on the heaplates is a very thin veneer or just a stain over the mahogany. Here is a picture from a gig I did that the light caught the headstock just right and it almost looks like straight mahogany and another from a different one with the same guitar. In the second pic the 12 string is on the stand .

normally unstained ebony. rarely something else, but usually *obvious*. I'm not aware of Larrivee staining mahogany black, never heard of this before except on a burst or otherwise painted instrument.

Ebony can have lighter streaks in it or be pure black. Most guitar makers have stained their ebony to give it a uniform black appearance.

Larrivee hasn't stained their ebony for quite a while, but a recent post about black stain rubbing off a bridge of a new guitar when it was cleaned makes me wonder if Larrivee is now doing this, (or it might have been the dealer).

The picture above was under stage lighting, but the L05-12 clearly has a veneer plate and it does have some reddish streaks to it. I have dinged it a time or 2 and it definitely is black, I just assumed it was stained due to the reddish streaked areas that show through normally. Blew ma away when I looked at that pic from that night though.

You can see that this looks like wood (grain lines, looks like ebony) on the LV-19

Heres a shot of the OM-03, you can see that the plate is about 1/16" thick so it is not paint but it doesn't look like wood.

This is the F-III, it doesn't look like wood.

Ahhh, I'd bet they are using Macasar Ebony:
(Diospyros celebica)

This ebony is a less constistent black with reddish or reddish brown and grey streaks, fine texture and a straight to wavy grain. Can have a real dramatic contrasting grain colour.
