Title: Page & Plant Acoustic Gem
Post by: Yoyodyne on June 16, 2009, 08:37:08 AM
Here's a very cool acoustic version by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zep's cover of "Nobody's Fault But Mine:"

Thanks for the reminder of this - I have the DVD, and it has some great performances on it - The Rain Song for instance.

It's a hurdy gurdy, a rosined wheel cranked against a set of strings.

Check out this version of "Gallows Pole" too:

here is link to ultimate-guitar.com showing tab with credits given to Page and Plant for words and music.

=====>http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/l/led_zeppelin/nobodys_fault_but_mine_ver3_tab.htm

I think what they did was to take an old 12 bars blues tune - going back at least to Blind Willie Johnson
and change it a little....not unusual, that happened a lot.
If that happened with a 'new' song today I suspect there might be legal action concerning royalties.

But many of those original artists died dirt poor even though some of them lived long enough to see others get rich from versions of their stuff.

A few did profit from their work later in life after others made it popular and they were 'discovered.'

Or for an alternative view:

the artilce said,
QuoteRobert Plant acknowledged that the Zep song was based on "another written a long time previously."

there is the smoking gun.....and my point proven...it was BASED on previous work....

I already mentioned that Plant and Page came up with a modified version and some different words.

That was my whole point. ...that the P&P version was based on previous work
as I said
QuoteI think what they did was to take an old 12 bars blues tune - going back at least to Blind Willie Johnson
and change it

So its not an alternate view. The article is making other points about the details and purpose of the lyrics.

- not to take away from the enjoyment of the P&P version - I like it.
just to give some credit where credit is due - to Mr. Blind Willie.
and to point back to some roots.

peace
Larry

Hey, no argument here! My mentioning that it was a cover version was intended to give credit to the original artist, and your additional info has expanded on that point nicely.

Led Zeppelin were in trouble a number of times for "ripping off" other songs without giving the proper songwriting acknowledgements.  I guess a lot of artists have done that.  They did produce some pretty amazing "cover versions", though.

Blind Willie Johnson performance of Nobody's Fault was probably a cover itself. Wiki says "A gospel under the title "It's Nobody's Fault but Mine" is listed in the 1924 Cleveland Library's Index to Negro Spirituals."

It's rural folk music, that's just how it works. That's how it is in bluegrass too, everyone is playing the same songs. The original artist should get paid for 'their stuff' but only if it truly is their stuff. We don't know if LZ ripped Blind Willie off any more than if Blind Willie ripped someone off.
