Hi Folks:
I've been very intrigued by the Larrivee L body lately as it seems to capture the best of both worlds, i.e. ability to handle a good strumming and flatpicking as well as fingerstyle.
Larrivee themselves feel that it is more suitable for fingerstyle and the OM for all around use. Given the L body dimensions, it doesn't seem logical that the larger body would be characterized as a fingerstyle guitar.
I want a mahogany workhorse guitar this time around and the LV-05e has my attention. Can anyone share their experiences with this model in terms of tonal characteristics, volume, (compared to a dread) ability to handle a good strummin' as well as whether or not it is balanced and articulate enough to handle fingerstyle?
My application is contemporary praise and worship music, not bluegrass...looking for versatility. I may also consider the LV-09e. But for some reason, I think mahogany will be better for lead work in an ensemble situation.

I think that the L-body is the best of both worlds!
I have have a LG-03BW and in the music that I write I do both strumming and fingerpicking and it does both beautifully.I have Blackwood back and sides (only 40 made) and it is basically in the same family as Koa, the volume that mine produce is dreadnaught like and more than enough to cut through the mix. I used to have a C-05, which is the same thing as an LV-05 but with a different cutaway.
I thought that it was an excellent all around guitar. The bass was stronger than I expected, but not overpowering. It didn't have as much bass as a friends D-05 though. Mine seemed to be a little warmer than most Larrivees I've played, but it was a 1995 model so it had broken in.
I used it mainly for strumming, and sold it when I got into fingerstyle for a Lowden. Looking back, it was a great fingerstyle guitar. Very warm and sweet. I just sold the Lowden and have an OM-10 ordered.
I wouldn't say that the L is more versitile than an OM, they just have different sounds. You can't go wrong with an L though for an all around guitar.

My Larrivee is an LV-05E. It's very loud acoustically and it holds up well to hard strumming. Even more so than my Seagull which is a full dread with a thicker top. One thing I've found is that the setup has alot to do with how well the guitar plays in each situation for each player.

The store in my town has had 3 D-03BWs and then my L-03BW. I think he ordered some of the last ones. I don't know if this is true but he said that there was 400 made of the Dread of 40 made of the L-body. Any ways he still has a D-03BW left, not a bad guitar actually I was gonna buy it until I played the L-body and it suited me better!
