I was talking to a guy today about various guitars. We hit on the Collings and Santa Cruz, but we couldn't really figure out what is "The Cadillac" of guitars? I thought Larrivee, of course.
What do you all think?

Gretsch White Falcon with a Bigsby, gaudy gold sparkle binding, gold coloured hardware ,snow white finish.
Acoustics a Guild D55 insunburst,think Tommy Smother's.

that has a Cadillac look to it.
GOODALL
Olson, Ryan, Wingert....there, that ought to cost my next years wages ;)
Unclrob--Did Smothers play a Guild?
Geez, I completely missed that.

fitness,
I'm with you there... <_<
naboz
B) Whatever the Black Guitar Johhny Cash played. Was that a Martin?
Andy
It is not considered the Cadillac, but if I could have just one guitar, it would be a Jumbo Parlor or Small Jumbo from John Mayes.

I'm not Unclrob, but yes Tom Smothers always played a Guild for as long as I remember.

A better question might be: what's the Cadillac of cars? I'm not sure its Cadillac any more.

Great topic. My garage would include:
Cadillac= Froggy Bottom -it's the workmanship.
Toyota 4x4= Taylor -dependable, gig after gig, after gig, with a neck design that doesn't wear out your hand even during those three hour nights.
Porshe= Goodall -simply incredible.
I can't classify Larrivee yet, but am proud to note that
I have come to terms with Ken Sargent regarding the LJ 05 he listed in the Buy/Sell/Trade portion of this forum and anticipate receiving it next week. (Or early the week after given the distance between Florida and Wisconsin.)
Not everyone likes Cadillacs. Some prefer Jags,BMW,Mercedes, or many others.
Same goes for guitars. Its all about personal preference. ;)
There are simply too many Fine guitars available today to limit yourself to one brand.

I recently saw the Smother Brothers on TV and Tom was playing a very nice sunburst Martin. I remember he always used to play a Guild on the old shows.
At one time Guild was considered the cream of the crop.
I think my Caddy would have to be something German like an Audi A8 or a high end BMW.
When I think of Cadillac, I usually think of the gaudied road-boats or the 50s, 60s and 70s, with all sorts of glitz. I think unclrob's Gretsch White Falcon is a good example.
For an acoustic, this seems like it to me:

Let me see, a cadillac.....meaning I can't afford to own, maintain, insure, etc. Guitars that are like that? Where do I start.....there's only a gazillion of those.
Now.....what would the be the Ford Fiesta of guitars?
Great responses! Booinec, I like your break down...I never thought of a "Toyota 4X4 of Guitars!" Plus, congrats on the Larrivee transaction!!
How many people end up financing their "Cadillac Geetars?" I think that is what I will have to do...Holy Dread Debt, Batman! B)

In another week or so I should have my "Cadillac".
Larrivee LV-05MT with Ab purfling and headstock inlay! :D
i must be relatively young b/c when i saw the word "cadillac", adjectives and thoughts like awesome, ultimate, coveted and 'holy grail' were far from my mind. different generation, i guess. hahaha.
Some of us are fossils
Lets see, Cadillac (mass produced in Detroit) for old farts and wanna be yuppies.
So that would be Martin. Mass produced in Penn., for old fart blue grass pickers and wanna be's.
Taylor, the new kid from California. New sound, play like an electric, mass production, cookie cutter looks and tone. For those that dare to be different from the old school. Infinity maybe?
Collings, the 1/2 ton, extended cab, 4 X 4, dusty Texas pick up truck that won't die on you.
Goodall, that's easy. Expensive, low production, hand made in an exotic land. Very sexy, but can be a bit tempermental. But if strummed just right makes the most beautiful music. My Ducati!
With all the small luthiers out thee now making some of the finest guitars ever...it's tough call. There is the obvious..Ryan, Wingert, Olsen etc. I'd love to have one of each.....I have a couple of Goodalls that are absolutely wonderful guitars...but when it comes to bluegrass...out comes my Martin....I like Taylors and Larrivee also. I have a couple of those too....
Huss and Dalton or Rockbridge. Got to be hand made in Virginia. What? Me opinionated?
For major manufacturers, my pick is the Martin OM-42. It has made converts to the OM body style of a lot of Dreadnaught fans.
For small builders, though I have no personal experience, many of the guys on the Martin board would agree with fitness's picks.

I saw a Bently the other day, really nice. I'd say that the Bently is the Cadillac of cars...
In my mind it would be Huss & Dalton.
