Title: Favorite Acoustic Guitar CDs
Post by: bamacrazy on June 27, 2007, 09:31:10 PM
What are your favorite acoustic guitar CDs. I'm focusing my future CD purchases toward roots/acoustic guitar. My current favorites are:
Norman Blake Whiskey Before Breakfast
Doc Watson and Bill Monroe Duets vol 2 (I think)
Ry Cooder Into the Purple Valley
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds Live at Luther College (not roots, but great playing)
The Bluegrass Album CD vol 1&2 (guitar overshadowed but great music & hang on when the guitar takes the lead!)
Flatt & Scruggs Complete Mercury Recordings

I'll have to post a few more when I get home and survay my CDs....

At $10 for 40 tracks on eMusic, and the average $0.99 at iTunes I don't buy many CDs. When I do it seems to be at a used book and music store to get a digital version of something I have on vinyl.

;)

While I agree that today a lot is available online and that CD's may soon be a thing of the past, many of these CD's I purchased years before anything was available online...some I bought before there was an "online" at all...

Oh yeah, I initially checked this out for my mom, based on a friends suggestion. If you at all are interested in the old spanish romantic Bolero music, check out anything by "Los Tres Ases" (the 3 Aces).

Tommy Emmanuel - "Only" - his best, IMO
Tommy Emmanuel - "Live One"
Tommy Emmanuel - "Endless Road"

I have some others of his, but must say that the last one "The Mystery" was a disappointment for me.

Laurence Juber - "Naked Solos" - he leans a little more classical than TE, and I don't think you could even put him on the same team as Tommy if you were forming a Guitar All Star team, but the CD is still enjoyable.

Warren Haynes - Live From Bonnaroo - not so much for his playing, but this guy can sing and is just him and his guitar.

Eric Clapton - "Unplugged" - no list would be complete without this one.

I pretty much agree, but I like Endless Road better than Only.  I'm not sure what he was thinking with the Mystery. That vocal track stuck in the middle of the disc was......umm.....a surprise, that's for sure.  I just think he's done all that can really be done in that style of music.  There's only so many ways to play a song "Travis style", you know.  I've seen him several times live and his live show, as cool as it is, gets a bit old too.  I'd like to see him team up with a cello player, a mandolin player, or something along those lines and change things up a bit; or maybe even become a duo with a great singer and focus on making great songs.  That was one of the things that made Chet great; he'd team up with others and play on other people's records, etc. and not just play fingerstyle guitar all the time.

For some great fingerstyle work, with a cello, check out Jonathan Adams and his wife, also known as Montana Skies.  Absolutely beautiful music.

I like most of Phil Keaggy's stuff as well.  Beyond Nature is a favorite, as is Cinemascapes.

I enjoy Willie Nelson's guitar playing, too.  His CD "Spirit" is an all-time favorite. Just him on Trigger with some piano and fiddle.  Really nice.

You are absolutely right about Niel Young' Harvest and Clapton unplugged. Its been years since I've listened to either. My wife was working late on a paper so I dusted off my headphones and listened to both. Simply amazing! I also have Young's Heart of Gold DVD that I had not yet watched. I found myself incredably moved by the music.

I ordered a few disks suggested by you folks so far. These include:
Young's Massey Hall CD/DVD package
Warren Haynes Live
Michael Hedges Ariel Boundaries

Others will follow. Thanks for your suggestions!

I made two discoveries this weekend; Tommy Emmanuel and YouTube. My old imac system 9 does fine with most browsing, but will not handle some audio/video content. We have been on vacation and took my wife's Dell laptop along. When I Googled TE I got a bunch of YouTube hits and checked em out. As you might imagine it took a loooong time to get me off the computer. That guy is phenomenal! My wife dug his playing too. Looks like Only, Endless, and Live are going on the buy list.

I don't understand where you folks hear of some of these musicians?  I read articles in guitar mags and lots of stuff online and have still never heard of many of these players.  Guess it's a pretty big ocean out there for guitarists.

And then on the other hand, lots of times when I do finally hear some of the guys spoken of so highly on the forums, I normally don't enjoy the playing much.  There seems to be many great players when it comes to technique; but when it comes to melody and good songs it's hard for me to find someone that speaks to me.  Anyone else go through this?

1. Me and Chet /  Me and Jerry - Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed's two Albums on one CD.  For me, It don't get better than this.
2. Leo Kottke - "6 and 12 string guitar" or "Greenhouse"
3. Hot Tuna - Hot Tuna (Their first album and my inspiration to learn to finger pick)
4. Pat Donohue - American Guitar (Fantastic!)
5. Ry Cooder - Paradise and Lunch (not all acoustic, but I still rate it number 4 all-time acoustic recordings.  Cooder's cover of Blind Blake's  "Diddy Wah Diddy" is the best I've ever heard. Not the fastest, but the BEST, AND the standard by which I judge all recorded acoustic guitars.

Here's a few that, IMO, no acoustic player should be without:

Charlie Patton The Best of Charlie Patton (Yazoo 2069)
Mississippi John Hurt Avalon Blues: The Complete 1928 OKeh Recordings (Sony CK 64986)
Crosby, Stills & Nash Crosby, Stills & Nash (Atlantic 82651-2)
John Hartford Aereo-Plain (Rounder CD 0366) currently out of print
Jerry Douglas & Peter Rowan Yonder (Sugar Hill SHCD-3847)
Norman Blake-Nancy Blake-Tut Taylor Shacktown Road (Dualtone 80302-01256-2)
Grateful Dead Workingman's Dead (Rhino R2 74396)

. . . and lastly, the best acoustic (well, all but three tracks are strictly acoustic) Bentonia blues disc in years, Jimmy "Duck" Holmes Back to Bentonia. Has anybody else here heard this disc yet? If you love country blues, you gotta hear this one.

My life feels richer having listened to the above albums/discs.

I asked the same question when I first started coming to the forum and got some great suggestions:

A couple of guitarists that I really like that haven't been mentioned are Doyle Dykes and Keola Beamer, who plays in a wonderful Hawai'ian Slack Key style. Michael Chapdelaine is also one you should check out.

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned Chet Atkins.  I love all of his stuff.  It's precise yet fun to listen to.  Another fine picker that a lot of folks overlook is Jerry Reed.  It's a shame that he will go down in history as "Snowman" on "Smokey and the Bandit" and very few know of this guitar talent.  Check him out on Youtube and see if you don't agree.

If you like John Renbourn and Robin Williamson, look for their live album "Wheel of Fortune" recorded in 1993. With JR on the guitar and RW on harp, it is stunningly beautiful acoustic folk music.

John
I like all the goofy comments inbetween songs on that record.  I'm never sure who's talking though, but I still laugh at them all.  There's this one where someone goofs up and says something like,  "ahh, thought I'd get that one past you, but eagle eye caught me....eagle ear caught me".  I laugh everytime I hear that for some reason.  Those guys must have had a blast making that record.  Tony Rice's guitar playing is frightening.  Nobody should be that good.

Creature,
I like those comments between takes, too.  That makes the record sound so "real" like they are just sitting around jamming and rolling tape.  I really never get tired of listening to Jerry, David and Tony play together....they have a great dynamic...even listening to the same songs over and over again you get the feeling like things could just go anywhere.  Yes, Tony Rice is scary good.  He seems to do things that seem physically impossible...the more you listen you more you think, "How does he do THAT?"   :+1:
