How often do you go to enjoy live music?

I don't go to many big rock concerts anymore.  The last stadium show I saw was the ELO farewell tour a couple years back at American Airlines Center in Dallas (it was great). 

Now and then an outdoor festival in my area will have a band I want to see, but not often.

There are lots of big churches in the area that host local classical music societies and artists/groups that come come through town.  My family and I have seen some wonderful shows, and most of them are free to attend (they pass the plate and the decent thing to do is pitch in). 

There's a lot of live music to get out and enjoy in any big city.  You just have to dig around a bit online to find it. After a while you'll end up on mailing lists and things that keep you in the loop.  I guess we get out to a handful of these things each year.  It always makes for a fun night out that doesn't break the bank. I think it's important to take kids out and expose them to different kinds of art and music.  Sometimes one of mine will think something is going to be lame but ends up having a great time and learning something new.

Jeff Lynne is a brilliant musician, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist. 

I quit going to big rock concerts decades ago. If I have to watch a jumbotron or look through binoculars to see the show I won't be there.
The good news is that most of the music and musicians I enjoy best will play small venues.

Actor Jeff Daniels just opened a new venue last week in the little town of Chelsea Michigan  where he lives (and close to home for me) and as luck would have it, he booked an artist I have been wanting to see for a long time, in mid-September so I grabbed 4 tickets the first day they went on sale.
It's a much more intimate experience. Similar to being right there in the living room with them.

The ELO show was one for the memories for sure, especially since Jeff is one of my favorite musicians of all time.  So many great songs.  It was kind of bittersweet though: he was helped on to the stage and seemed very feeble.  I don't think his guitar was even plugged in, and he had another fellow handling all the really high parts on vox.  But it was just cool to be in the same room as him.

I hear you on the big screens, etc.  It makes no sense to pay to watch a big TV when you can do that at home.
