Always kind of interesting to me to know the things people carry around on a daily basis. 

I always have a pocketknife and a lighter in my front pocket.  I use my knife daily, sometimes several times a day, and now and then you need a lighter (even if you don't smoke - I do not).  It always kind of amazes me when a man doesn't carry a pocketknife.  They are so insanely useful. 

I also carry an old silver dollar that my dad and granddad carried before me.   It is worn down almost smooth from the years.  You can barely make out old Ike's image on it anymore.

For the most part, with the exception of my guitar room, I am moving toward becoming a minimalist. Most days, I carry my wallet and my key ring which includes two car keys, a house key and a key for my bike lock. I generally wear a shirt or jacket with a breast pocket to hold my cell phone. Any loose change collected during the day gets deposited into my beer stein, which in turn is converted to cash and deposited into my guitar slush fund account once the stein is full of coins.

On weekends or when I'm on vacation (except when flying), I carry a Victoriknox Multi-Tool in a leather case on my belt. This tool includes a knife, needle nose pliers, mini saw, flathead screwdriver on one side; an awl, mini-scissors, Phillips head screwdriver and file on the other. If I can't solve any mechanical problem I encounter with the multi-tool, I always keep a hammer and a rubber mallet in the car or I can call AAA.

I have a Halo battery charger which also has a built in phone charger along with a Dewalt compressor in the trunk when traveling. There is also a thumb pick in each glove compartment in case I pass a guitar store in my travels.

PS I got to see Lyle Lovett and Leo Kottke swap songs and stories at a great concert two years ago near Columbus, OH. Two guys and four guitars.

Depends where I'm going. I live in a good neighborhood now so I only keep a utility knife, some tools, rope, and deodorant in the car and carry nothing when I go on midnight jogs. But, I've lived in places where carrying a firearm potentially saved my life. I know it saved me from getting robbed twice.

I used to take my car out to the Arizona desert with friends and got stuck once so I started carrying a shovel, rope, boards, and bags in the trunk. There was a few times when I'd go to put a date's shopping bags in the trunk and would see a horrified expression on their face.  That's a difficult series of items to explain. Thankfully, the gallon of water validated it all.

Although I live in Texas, I'm Canadian and you definitely won't ever see me with a gun, as a matter of fact, if I see someone has a gun I leave, don't want to be anywhere near someone carrying a gun.

I feel the same way for the most part. I don't like guns and am not a "gun guy."  No "Come and take it" nonsense on my back window, etc.   But something happened to me about ten years ago that caused me to get a license and start carrying.  I hope it never happens to you.

I've carried a pocketknife since I was a teenager, and for the past several years it's been the small Swiss Army Knife that's about 2" long, and it's in a little leather sheath. Blade, scissors, file and Phillips screwdriver, and tweezer and toothpick. Quite the dynamic little tool. I'd be lost without it. I've had a concealed carry permit for many years but have yet to carry anywhere in public. During our Michigan winters, my 4WD truck always has a shovel, tow strap and jumper cables.

About 5 years ago I traded in my jumper cables for a little compact portable car jump starter. I can jump my own car and anyone else's without stretching cables between two vehicles irrespective of how or where they're parked. Has a built in flashlight and USB ports.

Those are nice...when they work! We had one a few years back but it was a piece of junk and wouldn't hold a charge. I'm sure newer ones are probably much better.

But you know, like anything else, there's limitations.
Jumper cables are great as long as they reach between the two vehicles. But if you're parked between two other cars with another car or a wall in front of you, the cables might not be the best solution.

Anyway, mine works great. I've used it several times. Cobra Model CPP15000. I'm guessing I've had it about 4 years now, and still holds a charge. I jumped a stranger's big Cadillac SUV in the Kroger's parking lot about 5 weeks ago and I hadn't refreshed the Cobra's internal battery for a couple of months. I charge it after each use.

And of course, this need not be an either/or, mutually exclusive, one-or-the other choice. We can do both. We have all learned the value of "backups" in recent years (computer files, home generators, contingency plan in logistics).

I've been thinking of putting together some kind of kit for my Tacoma with jumper cables and other emergency stuff, but the trouble is there's hardly any room behind my back seat, and I don't want a crate full of stuff taking up passenger space all the time. 

Those multi-tool/multi-purpose knives are great.  I used to own a Leatherman, which is quite different but still sort of the same, and man, was it helpful.  I got on a eBay selling kick and almost sold everything in the house. Wish I still had it. 

I've carried a pocketknife most of my life, but only recently acquired one with a flipper.  This means it comes out of the pocket and can be flipped open with my thumb via a small lever on the back.  Super handy!  I got this Honey Badger from a booth at a recent show.  I like it a lot.
