George was always my favorite Beatle, but over the years I've really developed an appreciation for his wonderful slide playing.  You can hear it on Jeff Lynne's recordings, the Wilbury stuff, and of course all over George's solo work.

There are many guitarists with a distinctive tone that is easily recognizable.  As we all know here, that's a really tough feat in itself!  Most guys playing guitar just sound like a guy playing the guitar, but a few will create their own truly unique sound.

George did that with his slide playing, which I think might be even harder to do than with regular guitar playing.  Maybe it was the influence of the sitar that made his slide work sound so slinky and just different than everyone else's. Not sure.

If you've never listened closely to his slide work, check it out:

The solo in this song is a great example:

Here is another (the outro work is especially great - he really makes it "talk"):

Yeah, he developed a really distinctive tone and style I think I first noticed it in my teens on that Wilburys first album. since then, it's easy to pick out of a crowd. If you go back to something like If Not For You, you can see the growth in it.

Wonderful, iconic musician - especially his melodic signature slide playing. My fave Beatle and slide guitarist, mos def.
