Next Larrivée

Hello All:

My first post here on the forum!  Like many, do I need another guitar?  No, but I am looking to add another unique Larrivée to the arsenal. I currently have the SD-40 12 fret, the OM-6 Simple, and also a Martin D-28, Gibson Hummingbird, and Guild Concert M-20.

I am thinking something in the LV series since I don't have a cutaway, but am open to any suggestions that anybody thinks is a unique addition to my stable.  I play a combo of fingerstyle and strum without a pick.

If I could play bigger guitars for more than a few minutes, some version of Larrivee L would be my first choice. With or without cutaway would be fine. They are (in my opinion) about the most versatile guitar out there. Capable of being fingerpicked or hard strummed or anything between.

I love the LV body! I don't need the Venetian cutaway since I don't play on the highest frets, but I think the L body just looks nicer with a cutaway. Highly recommend the LV.

It sounds like you have a nice variety! Have you considered something smaller? Like a 00? I avoided them for years and ended up finding them to be my favorites now.

I would consider a different top wood like mahogany on an L body with the parabolic bracing like a 03 or 05 model.

Good suggestion, Bowie. A Larrivee 00 would be long scale at 25.5" versus your short scale M-20. Could be a nice choice if you like smaller bodied guitars.

First, welcome to the Larrivee Forum and I encourage you to become a regular here. You can get a lot of good advice and make some online friends from all over at the same time. I own two L bodied Larrivees with a Venetian cutaway: A LV-03 12 string with a mahogany top, back and sides along with an LSV-03 with a Moonwood Spruce top, Walnut back and sides. From my own perspective, Larrivee shines in three areas: 1) Wood selection and preparation, 2) Guitar design and construction, 3) Satin finishes.

As others mentioned, a 00 is another great choice. Last October, I bought a 12 fret, short scale, 00-24. The 24 series comes with an Adirondack Spruce top, mahogany back and sides. I asked them to put a Mahogany top on mine instead of Adirondack. It was well worth the wait and this guitar is hard to put down. 

The 24 series comes in a variety of body shapes including 00, 000, OM, OMV, L, LV, D and SD. All of them have 12 fret 24.75" short scale necks except the L and LV which have 14 fret, 24.75" necks. All guitars also have scalloped bracing, vine headstock inlay, vintage tuners, pyramid bridge and a rosewood radial rosette and body trim. I upgraded my guitar to an archtop case which is a perfect fit and includes a padded handle. I also added a factory installed Anthem SL pickup.

I've had Ls, OMs and parlours.

Honestly... The ones that I simply cannot put down, that I pick up and are in my hands all the time... Are the parlours. But I think the OP might like the L body.

I've yet to try a Larrivee OO but one thing is for sure. I am sticking to 12 frets from now on - I will forever love my OMs but the sound and feel from that lower bridge placement is magic.

G-man's post reminded me that each of my 6 string Larrivees has a 12 fret neck with a different scale length including:

Parlor - 24" scale
LSV-03 - 25.5" scale (The Venetian cutaway allows easy access to the entire fingerboard).
00-24 - 24.9" scale

I also have a Martin 000 (Sitka/Mahogany) with a 12 fret, 24.9" scale and a slotted headstock. With the exception of the straight braced parlor, the other three guitars all have scalloped bracing and it does make a difference in the sound. 

This isn't an endorsement and I haven't purchased a guitar from any of these three dealers but check out the Larrivees at Tune-up Guitars (Boise, ID), Sweetwater Guitars (Fort Wayne, In) and Heartbreaker Guitars (Las Vegas, NV).

Maybe you need a Larrivee C03 TE?   It works OK for Tommy Emmanuelle.  Super 12 fretter with Florentine cutaway and simply a joy to play.   Ergonomics, Tone and fretboard access.  Sitka over rosewood and satin finish for tone and very comfortable in the lap!  Listen to me now and believe me later.   :)

I'm amazed at how the price of the TE-C03R has increased since it came out. I play lefty and bought several instruments from Jerry's Lefty Guitars. He has had two new ones and sold one for around $2200. They now sell for just shy of $3000 and that is in 3 years. He still has one and if the shop opens in the near future like he told me, I might just snag it. It is the only cutaway that looks like someone didn't take a bite out of the guitar. I will say that I really have become a convert to the parabolic bracing since getting D-03R (The best guitar in the world) last year. I posted a comparison video a couple of weeks ago comparing the TE to and SD-40R and it blew the Sd away. Maybe it is the bracing?

I've heard that Tommy's signature on the label gives it a deeper bass response.     (No disrespect, I happen to be a huge Tommy Emmanuel fan and he signed my P-03)

Very cool!!

Also very cool that teh has 12 frets with different scale lengths. The scale length makes a huge difference to the tone.
