I was fortunate enough to play a new 000-40 Koa Special today at Guitar Tex's very nice shop in San Antonio. My knees got a little weak when they put it in my hands, honestly, as it just feels special to the touch. Lighter weight than I was expecting, but there was no loss in voice due to the feather feel of this beauty. Absolutely stunning guitar in every aspect, and it's going to haunt me that I didn't take it home. No room for another right now, but now that I know it's out there...
Can't say enough about Guitar Tex, his wonderful, kind and knowledgeable staff. And a big shout out to Mike Jones (mike in lytle) for his kindness is setting up my visit and meeting me there.

Is it koa topped? I have a particular fondness for koa topped instruments. It behaves differently than spruce, while still sounding balanced. There's a reverberant and sparkly quality that I'm in love with.

No, I should've mentioned that the top is Italian Alpine Spruce. This thing just sings! Gorgeous Koa back and sides.

Did it have a pick guard? That top would probably be gorgeous without a pick guard.

The back and sides will make you forget about the top though.

I used to not like pick guards but I've grown to appreciate them in many cases as they add a little asymmetry, which can be nice. Especially with something like a dread, which is not an aesthetically great body shape. I think the guitar in the link probably looks better with the guard, personally.

Absolutely wonderful guitar!!! Something else that struck me about this guitar is that it just felt perfectly balanced. And I mean in weight and sound. They handed it to me and the magic starts right then and there as soon as you touch it. Hard to explain, but it was love at first sight, touch and sound.

What stunning wood in the back!! A real work of art. I even love the way the wood looks on the back of the headstock! Enjoy that guitar forever.

Yes, it sure is a lovely guitar. The one I played had moon spruce (I believe) and koa b/s. One of my favorite Larrivee experiences, no question. If I buy another 000-12-fret, this one is high on the list of candidates. The one I played was so beautiful, too. Real eye candy!
