What to expect from a 000-40 vs 00-40?

Like my 00-40MH very much, but still some GAS stirrings. Would greatly appreciate any comments re: what I'm "missing" with the 00 compared to the 000. Thank you in advance!

No affiliation but I'd give Nick's Tune-Up Guitars a call. They have some nice Larrivees in inventory with some killer deals and can give a better answer than me.

My 12 fret, short scale 00-24 Larrivee has a mahogany top and while I don't have a Larrivee 000, I do have a 12 fret, short scale 000 spruce and mahogany Martin. Both are great guitars. I also have a spruce and rosewood 14 fret OM.

Since you already have a hog top Larrivee 00-40, I would suggest you consider a 000-24 short scale spruce and rosewood 000-24. If you want a 12 fret, 25.5" scale guitar, I'd consider a spruce/rosewood 000-40 which is the same price. My Forum VI has a 12 fret, 25.5" scale that I like with a moonwood top and walnut back & sides.

I would let the music you play influence your next choice and also the sound you like the best. I'm a rosewood tone wood man. And while I like my all-mahogany top instrument for some things, it isn't as versatile as a spruce top guitar.

I owned a OOO once as well as a few LS's so my take is you miss what I can only call "thump"- that bass you feel as much with your body as your ear. For me and what I play up the neck, that extra bass added a bit of boomy-ness that got in the way of the melody notes. More importantly, having played nothing but OO's for some time, the extra bulk of the LS wasn't all that welcome.

I'd say deeper bass, louder, and possible better strumming with the triple 0.

Many guitars have passed through my hands over the years, including two 00s.
The one I miss most is a 000-50-FSB Traditional Series.
Perhaps the finest guitar I have ever owned. Never should have let it go.

I have a 00-50 Traditional and have had a 000-50 Trad.  Similar tone-wise however the 000-50 had so much more volume/presence. The 000-50 was louder than my OM-50 and pretty close to a dreadnaught.  I sold the 000-50 ( a great guitar BTW however it had a 1 13/16th" nut) and the OM-50 and kept the 00-50 as a very nice couch guitar.

I'm with you on this. Too much bass hides magic mids.

I also do NOT prefer deeper bodies. On slimmer bodies there's an immediacy to the notes which I prefer. Snappier.

I didn't see the post you quoted but I also very much agree. It took me a long time to appreciate the nuance that can be communicated when the bass isn't strong, like it is in a dread. The better I get, the more I really love smaller guitars. Granted, the feel of deep bass is more impressive and soooo satisfying. But, what keeps me noodling for long sessions is the character in the midrange, something that may favorite guitars makers (Larrivee and SCGC) do a great job of showcasing in their instruments. Gibsons are also known for this.

While I don't generally like deep bodies (too muddy), I recently got a deep-body 00 which I love to death. The 00-sized real-estate of the top means the response is immediate, but the deeper body gives the bass wavelengths some room to develop.

Wisdom!!
