So we decided to cancel our Sirius/XM subscription. We listen to it in the car only, maybe an hour or two a week. They quickly cut our bill in half if I'd continue the service. Well worth a phone call.

I remember doing that with a new car back in 2008.  Amazing that they are still offering a lower charge if you call them.  Good advice!

They took a page from the cable company playbook.

I would guess that it costs them absolutely nothing to do what they did and if they didn't they would completely lose my payment. It only makes sense, I suppose. My wife likes it or I would have said, thanks but no thanks. I can use my phone and blue tooth and stream Pandora for free. I don't mind the odd commercial.

I've been doing the yearly cancel/cheap renewal thing with them for a few years. The last time I called I got an automated message asking if I was calling to renew at the cheaper price, or something like that. All automated, easy peazy. I mark the date on my calendar for renewal. I don't listen to regular radio anymore, and can even bluetooth it from my phone app to my wife's vehicle.

I'll be doing the same.

The dropped price only means they could charge that all the time and still be profitable.  Some feel that's a good deal, but it always makes me feel like I'm getting screwed.

I was thinking back to the good old 20th century when I got married. We had something like 5 or 6 line items on our bills.  Now there is internet, phones, TV (no one paid for TV back then!), etc, etc, etc.  It's crazy how much we've spent just keeping up with the times.  I admire the Amish...

True. It costs them nothing to activate a radio. There is no advertising though unless you count Sirius promoting itself. I get Pandora free and they only advertise a bit. I could get it ad free for $6.00 a month but I can't see it. I also pay for Amazon Music but it's well worth it as far as I'm concerned. I have a great Bose speaker system attached to my laptop and it sounds quite good. At least, to these old ears. There's almost nothing that you can't listen to, at least, I haven't stumped it yet.

Nice to have different sources of music for exploring new music and artists by choice, as opposed to just hearing what they choose to play, as they do on Sirius. I find myself using YouTube for the first step in learning new music to add to the repertoire. From there I mostly go to the Ultimate Guitar app on my tablet, then to Songbook Pro to add to the ever growing list. But that's a whole 'nother story, as they say.

Sirius has some great dedicated channels. The Beatles, Tom Petty and others. I find their Outlaw Country channel plays a lot of new stuff that I've never heard. I listen to a lot of things on Youtube, as well. Especially the educational videos. Great resources out there. So different than when I was starting out. It was difficult to get anything in the mid 60's unless you knew someone who could figure songs out just by listening and was willing to show you. Over the years, I actually got quite good at that myself.
