Old Amps

Acquired some ancient amplifiers lately. 1955 Gibson G-5 and a 1965 Sears Silvertone Twin Twelve. Both sound good with either the RS-4 or the Strat.

I used to have one of those Silvertone 1484s (I think that's the model). Had a lot of fun with it. Very limited but what it does is so unique and I just love it.

Back in 1966, the other guitar player in the first band I was in had one of these that we both played through for a while. Then back in the 90's I jammed with a fellow who had one and played a '54 Strat through it. Sounded sublime. It's mostly nostalgia because I really don't need another amp and for what it cost, I could probably buy something newer, better and more reliable but I wanted it. It's got a very nice clean tone. The 12" Jensens are in good shape. The reverb is kind of crappy but the tremelo works pretty well. I have pedals that do a better job though. It is capable of being very loud.

The Gibson was a cool find. It belonged to the husband of a friend's sister. He passed away a couple of years ago and she was finally getting rid of some of his things and was going to toss it as it looked pretty ratty. A couple hundred dollars to get it working. Nice little amp.

Yea, the reverb on those is comically bad. And, I agree that the trem is actually really good.

Those amps surged in popularity because the guy from the White Stripes used one. I sold mine at the peak of that craze. I kinda regret it though. I got a great price but I really miss that tone. There's nothing quite like it in a 2x12.

Nice finds.  Also, I really like your guitars.  The Larrivee electric is beautiful, and that fretboard just looks like it would be a dream to play on.  My first electric guitar was a Strat like yours: same color, FB material, etc. 

This thread reminds me of something I've not thought of in many years.  Back in 1993 or so a friend and I went up to his church one weeknight.  The building was very old and in an old part of town.  The pastor was there going through a bunch of stuff and getting the place cleaned up.  When we showed up he was up in the attic and called us up there.  He knew I played guitar and showed me some "old stuff" he'd found in the attic and offered it to me for free.  I remember there being two old Gretsch amps and a set of old Gretsch drums.  I was 19 and into heavy metal at the time and passed on the amps.  The worst part is that he told me if I didn't want the stuff he was going to put it in the dumpster out back to clear out the space.  So all that vintage gear (that was even vintage then!) got trashed!

Ouch. I'm the kind of guy who perks up at ... "free dirt"? LOL
I got a bunch of other things from this woman who just wanted the stuff gone. A Squier strat body that needs the guts and tuners but is in nice condition. That will cost me from $60 to $250 depending on what prewired setup I order. A Kustom bass bottom minus the speakers but I have a line on two 15" JBLs. A small Kustom amp that doesn't work and isn't worth fixing. A Crate amp that needs some work but may also not be worth fixing. A bunch of straps and accessories. There were two low end electric guitars that I'm attempting to sell for her, as well. It mostly looked like junk to her.
