Clear Pickgaurds

     I ordered several clear PGs from Larrivee over six months ago.
The one I put on my all hog 000 didn't seem tip look right. I just thought it was old stock.

    But a little while ago as I was doing some finger picking, I got to looking very close at the PG. A corner appeared to be coming up. I  gently used my fingernail to probe the edge and had a pleasant surprise.

    The gloss clear PG had a film over it. I pulled the film off and now have a very nice gloss, clear PG.

      I never had a film over a clear PG, that I remember. But most of the ones I've put on were satin finish, clear PGs.

      Always something new to learn about guitars.

I've been meaning to replace the clear pick guard on my Morgan for years. Thanks for the reminder.

What's the safest way to remove the old one?

Judicious use of a hair dryer on low, something plastic to get it started (the edge of a thin pick or credit card), and naphtha to remove any glue residue.  Oh, and most of all, patience.

I also loosen the strings first.  I worry about applying that much heat near the bridge while it is under tension, it would be a big bummer to have the bridge fly off while doing something simple like removing a pick guard.

Yup, you can use a plastic paint scraper, sanded down to a thin fine edge. Never had any ťrouble using that tool.
  Naptha is the safest way to go,for sure.
Sometimes the glue residue is hard to remove with Naptha though.

    I never thought about the bridge coming loose, and have never had one come loose. But loosening the string tension sounds like a good idea.
