Kamaka uke

My late aunt gave me this old 50s/60s Kamaka gold label soprano uke about 6 years ago, when she moved.  She got it in Hawaii when she traveled there way back when, and gave it to me after it had sat in her closet for decades.  When I first had it handed to me, it seemed like a tiny cheap toy, aimed at tourists, but my research proved otherwise.  Apparently, these were among the best ukes made in that era, just behind Martin.  I'm the only musical one out of 20 or so cousins...so I got it...lucky me!  Had cracks and bridge was off, so I sent it off to our own unclrob, who repaired and set it up for me, he did a fine job, and this baby sounds great.  Now I need to woodshed to be worthy of this fine instrument.  Will be fun this summer, luggin' this on weekends away, instead of a big Larry L body!

Kamaka ukes are amongst the very best.  Congrats!  Wish I had an aunt that gave me a Kamaka!

Your blog reminds me of a Kamaka baritone I bought in Honolulu in '65. It was magnificent. The tone and projection were unbelievable. It cost $95.00 with a crummy case. Every penny I had. I was on my way to the airport to fly to the mainland, and I couldn't afford the $1.00 for a drink on the plane. The wife got it when we divorced in '91. I still miss that baby!
