Does anybody out there have a newer D-10e?

Hi, I'm new to the forum.  Glad to meet you guys.

I played a friend's Larrivee LV a couple months back and absolutely fell in love with it.  I'm toying with the idea of ordering a new D 10e dreadnaught; does anybody have a newer one and what do they think of it?

None of the dealers I talked to in Oregon have one in stock and would have to order one for me from Larrivee itself.  This would mean committing to buy one before actually sitting down to play it.  Normally, I'd want to sit down with the guitar in the shop and put it through its paces.  Should I be concerned about spending that much money sight unseen for this guitar?

Cheers,

Andre

I have a 2002 D10E.  Is that new enough?  They have not really changed, mine has the same vine inlays as the 2011 model does.  They are fabulous guitars, deep and resonant with nice bass and typical Larrivee balance.  A terrific dreadnaught that you can even play fingerstyle with a light touch.  These are the top of the line, so you get great craftmanship and attention to detail.  I wouldn't trade mine for anything.

Thanks for the feedback friend!  Now I want one even more.

Why are you set on a D? What was missing for you with the L you tried?

Excellent question!

I'm thinking about a dreadnaught for two reasons.  My friend's LV guitar was incredible to play, but I already have a rosewood Baden auditorium-sized guitar that I'm absolutely in love with.   The second reason is that I've always liked the dreadnaught sound of the Martin D-28 and D-35's.   Money being what it is, I can't buy both a Larrivee D-10 and LV-10 so I have to make a hard choice.

That said, I'm still not 100% sure I'm doing the sane thing by considering a dreadnaught over another auditorium sized guitar with a cutaway.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are unlikely any Larrivee will give you a Martin Sound - if that is what you are after then I'd go for a Martin as you may just be disappointed with a Larrivee because they sound very much like a Larrivee  :winkin:  Playing your friends L will give you an appreciation of the tone of Larrivee the D may very well give you more Bass & Boom which could be what you seek.

You might also consider a different wood for back and sides such as Mahogany or Maple  - lots of options for sure. Wouldn't rule out an L simply because of having a Baden Auditorium. Do your best to sample a D or an L in another wood from Rosewood is my strongest thought. Also be conscious of nut size which is important to many.

Nice

Nice
:+1: I find that the D-16, especially the Adirondack, has a more 'modern' balanced sound, more like a Larrivee than the D-28, etc, which all lack trebles in comparison.

I listened to a couple D-10 sound clips I found on YouTube and really liked what I heard.  I just need to find a dealer in OR/WA who has some Larrivee guitars in stock so I can try some different wood / body combinations and see what I like.

I'm new to the Larrivee lineup, so does the "V" in the model name denote a cutaway?

Thanks,

Andre

Yes the V stands for Venetian cutaway, if it has a C it is a Florentine cutaway (the pointy one)

ST et al,
In the Wiki link you posted, I just noticed the new entry re The Forum V.  It has the wrong year attached to it (i.e. it reads 2010, should be 2011).

Thanks for spotting that. It's fixed now.

I have a 2002 "DV09" custom (built when they did such things). You may still get a good dealer to twist some arms and get something done for you. I too wouldn't part with mine, just a bit more thump than an "L" which I own in mahogany/sitka 12 string.

Hey andre,

You could always buy a used one. I've got a mint LV-10E that will be up for sale shortly for your consideration.
