Very impressive magazine, full of great guitar porn and profiles. I don't remember anything on technique, or instrument reviews,  but "Acoustic Guitar" is helpful there. Yes, costly, and tragically they already profiled JCL (Issue sold out!) So what possible reason is there to subscribe in the future?!  :roll

I just got the latest issue and took it on our trip to the mountains. Nice magazine...I haven't subscribed to a guitar magazine for many years but I might bite on this one.

My favorite articles in this issue were about Huss and Dalton guitars and the one about David Rawlings.  Good stuff and a classy production...

Gibson Advanced Jumbo  - J-185 - J200 Jr.
 National Resophonics  M1 Tricone
 Eastman MD-904 - DGM-1

Reminder that if anyone missed the JCL article, I have a solution - PM me if you are looking for it.

It cost me a lot of cash to get it 2nd hand in the UK (shipped from America, which took 6 weeks - rowing boat I believe it was), so I only got that one issue, but it is head and shoulders above any of the UK guitar mags for sure.

I used to subscribe to "Acoustic Guitar" but found it gradually less and less interesting.

I now subscribe to "Fretboard Journal" which is excellent. Highly recommended! It is a bit costly, but each issue is more like a book than a magazine, the articles are in-depth and the photography of the highest standard.
Larrivée Limited Edition Rosewood Parlor (2003)
plus various other acoustic guitars and one ukulele

I've subscribed for about 2 years now and while a little pricey, it's worth every penny.  Very interesting, in-depth articles with excellent photography, e.g., the article about the TOTAL rebuild of the pre-war D-18 - amazing how much money and effort went into that.

Acoustic Guitar, while a little weak, nevertheless is a magazine dedicated to our passion - acoustic guitars!  And the subscripotion doesn't cost a lot.

Chas.

Fretboard Journal has a podcast as well.  You can get it free on itunes.

Larrivee is far from Acoustic only my friend. Have I ever suggested you take a look at the RS 4

Tad sent me a copy of the fall 2009 issue. Number 15. So if someone wants to read it and then mail it on the next forum member just say so. I'll mail it at my expense and then you do the same next time.
Lot's of interesting things in these "JOURNALS" They really are more than a magazine.

I subscribe and have all of the issues from number 1 to the current one that just came in.  I like it.  The articles are a lot more in depth than what you usually see in magazines.  They go way beyond the usual "what strings do you use.  What guitar do you play" type are article that almost writes itself in the other magazines.  It also has introduced me to some players, builders and collectors that I might not have known about otherwise.  I look forward to it, read it  thoroughly when it comes in and keep them on the shelf for rereading and reference.
In the latest, I really enjoyed the dialogue between two of my favorite performers, Tim O'Brien and Sam Bush.  There is also a very nice artice about Michael Millard or Froggy Bottom guitars and a nice, short article about Roy Clarke.
It is a very nice, very high quality publication.

It is less of a magazine and more of a book. I love the depth of the artists and luthiers they review and all the articles seem to be more like NPR than 20 second news sound bites.

Great magazine and I buy it every quarter to keep my local bookstore in business. At $12.95 a shot it had better be good!

Collings OM2Hc (EIR/Sitka)
Schenk Ophirio (Sapele/Cedar)
Bourgeois 00 Custom (Mahogany/It. Spruce)

It has been described as the Architectural Digest for stringed instruments. A beautiful magazine with high quality photographs and well researched and written articles, I look forward to every new issue.
