I was disappointed in the playing and the song -

...but Peter is trying to make a point , not a hit record  :bgrin:

If my insurance company would help out with the cost I would have it done...
but they will only pay a small amount for a 'preventive screening'.

My understanding is a typical cost might be $2500 - 3000

Does anyone know more about that ?

I think you are a little light on the amount they charge, it is pretty invasive and requires a type of surgery when they are in there if they find things, which they almost always do, but mostly benign, thank God.

I thought most insurance companies would pay for that kind of procedure. I know Congress' insurance pays for it. Maybe you have the 'one-way' insurance: premiums go in; nothing comes out.

(Sorry if any of you make a living selling insurance)

Well, I would charge members of Congress 3-5 times as much as everyone else, just becasue they're so full of ..it!

While that figure strikes meas being high (although it probably shouldn't, given the cost of medical servics these days), my tests have always been paid for through our national health care program here in Canada.  Due to my family history, I'm actually pretty happy to have the opportunity to have this type of screening every 5 years.  It beats the heck out of the alternative...

It all depends on what particular coverage your company has with an insurance company.
To keep rates lower, our company does not have the best coverage plan.
(its with the most popular company around here - Blue Cross Blue Shield ) -

Up until last year, our plan would not pay anything toward screenings,
beginning this past year - they will pay a max of $750 if I recall correctly -
...that would help a little....but if the bill is $3,000 .....that makes a hard choice for me...

do I borrow the money and make monthly payments to get a test that may say I'm fine

(or  borrow the money and make payments to get a test that may save my life )

or do I take my chances.....

There is also risk involved with taking the test - some people die from it, some get infected etc - a small percent -
but then its only a small percent that are found to have cancer

there is risk involved if you DON'T take the test
and there is risk involved if you DO take the test.

IF I had the money or my insurance helped out more I would take the test.
Right now I don't plan to have it done if I have to borrow the money to do it.

I'm scheduled for one in May. Being Canadian, I won't get a bill. I'm not fooling myself into thinking it's free, however. I just did my tax return.
Yarrow owns one of the few Larrivées, I've seen, that's older than mine. Anyone got a link to the tune in question so we can see the guitar?

The worst part of the procedure is the 24 hours before the scope. The best part is the medication they give you when you get to the hospital.

Seriously, go to the late great Dan Fogelberg's web site to see what he and his wife have to say about medical testing and pre-cancer screenings.

As far as paying the bill, there are several different approaches here in the states. For example:

1) If you have B/C Premier, Point of Service or some other version and the doctor participates, they will accept the B/C Allowance which is significantly less than what you are billed for (generally speaking) by the provider. You pay the deductible and coinsurance subject to maximum limits.

2) Self Payors are generally expected to pay the full bill which requires negotiation on the patient/bill payor's part.

3) Medicare - Government pays most, a supplement or self-pay for the rest

4) Medicaid or Medical assistance - We pay through taxes and the provider writes off the rest.

5) If elected officials had to pay 100% of their premiums every month, the problem would get fixed right away. I say lock them all in a room with no windows or bathroom facilities, feed them baked beans, deviled eggs and beer, turn up the heat and don't let them out until they reach a compromise. Oh and put it on pay for view. I'd pay to see that.

For those who are covered on a private insurance plan who don't think we already have socialized medicine, you are wrong. Them that has coverage subsidize them that who don't. You can call it an insurance premium or a tax (i.e. National Health Care) but what difference does it make what it's called if it comes out of your pocket? Just like enhanced interrogation techniques tested better than torture didn't it?

Living in Canada means my annual "inspection" (pretty rough family history) is, as duck says, "freeish".

True story... My last visit I got a bit of a surprise. As I was wheeled into the room the doc asked if it was OK if they used a brand new monitoring device that the sales person (yup, it was a fresh as a daisy she) was demonstrating. I have caught glimpses of the procedure on the screen before (you really aren't knocked out, but given a hallucinogen that makes you forget the event (if they get the dose right)) and the new machine had a much higher detailed picture. In this case what you don't know can hurt you, so I was very happy that they got the IMAX experience. James Cameron would be very pleased if he could capture pictures of that resolution!

Being a tech geek I am looking forward to this years event, as well. To make sure they get the "whole" picture, I will be swallowing (I'm not making this up folks) a miniature camera that is about the size of a large vitamin pill. It sends a wireless signal back to a pack that will hang around my waist and records the entire trip from the tip of my lips to the end of my hips. Some lucky clinician gets to eat popcorn and watch the movie, and then do a review. I don't care what they say about the plot, as long as I get two thumbs up at the end of the review.

TMI, or should I send you a link to YouTube when it's done.....?
Ron

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield here in Tuscaloosa,Alabama and I just had my first scheduled
"Colonoscopy" and it cost me a whopping $65 out of pocket! :thumbsup

It was a "CAKEWALK"!The 133 ounces of "ELECTROLYTE FLUIDS" that I drank the day before
had literally no taste! It was as close to drinking water as you can get! The "Drugs' that were
given to me by I.V. were awesome! One minute the nurse said "OKAY THIS IS GONNA MAKE YOU
SLEEPY" and the next thing I know I am out in "Recovery Room" with my wife asking had they
done the procedure yet! :nanadance

off to the website to see if they have it available.

Google search for CBS Morning Show Peter Yarrow took me right to the link, http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/03/09/earlyshow/leisure/music/main6281612.shtml

The song was a little hard to take, but I enjoyed a couple of turns of lyric, and compared to anticipated results if I were challenged to write a song on the topic, it was effective for its purpose.
