New OM-03Z - If my serial number research is correct this is the first one of the five OMs built. Kudos to JCL for using such cool wood in an affordable 03 series instrument!

Thanks, Blue!

It sounds different than any other Larrivee I've played. It projects like crazy and has an aggressive, bright, woody quality. My sapele OM sounds smooth and refined in comparison, while the Z is brash and in your face -  louder than one would expect from an OM.  It still has that Larrivee balance, though.

Thanks, Ben! They made 5 L-03Zs as well. Maybe one of our band of brothers (and sisters) will pick up one and post some pics as well...

sweet. glad to see Larrivee doing this. Guess I'll have to change my guitar web page where I say I have the only Zebrawood Larrivee ever sold.    :thumb

From a luthier web site:   Zebrawood (Microberlina brazzavillensis or Microberlina bisulcatia) having common names of Zebrano, Zingana, Allen Ele, and Amouk. Zebrawood is grown in the equitorial region of Africa, Gabon and Cameroon, and is a heavy hard wood with medium coarse texture and close grain. The distinctive brown and black lines alternating with a tan background are what gives zebrawood it's name. The background will darken into a more golden brown with age. In order to bring out the exciting stripped figuration zebrawood is always quartersawn. The workability and resonance of zebrawood are similiar to Indian rosewood and it has good gluing, finishing and polishing properties.

Good info, Randy! Thanks.

Is there a picture of your Z up here or can you post one? We'd love to see it!

I am sure Randy won't object to me linking to the page http://randyrick.us/guitars/LarriveeC19zebrawood.htm which I see he has updated.  Randy, you have the only gloss finished Zebrawood Larry ever sold.  Equally as beautiful.

"Live simply so that others may simply live"

I myself just recieved a wedding gift from my wife a day before our wedding.

A D-03Z!  Like your OM mine is the standard D-03 model except it too is part of the Special Edition Zebrano.  My guess is that they made 5 of each of the OM, L, and D (-03's).  The more I find out about it, the more exiting it is.  How crazy that my wife picked this out without knowing hardly anything about it.  I will try and post some pictures of it soon.  I recieved the guitar November 27th and she must have purchased no more than a week before.  I wonder how they decided which dealers got the special editions.  Where did you get yours Geoff?

Yay for us!  I would also love to sit down and hear your OM-03z along with my D-03z.

Take care!

-Bradley
Larrivee D-03Z

Hey Bradley,

Congratulations, and welcome to the 'Z' Club!   :welcome:    Sounds like you've got a keeper, both in your new D-03Z and your wonderful bride!

Mine came from Sam Ash in Atlanta (the guitar, not my bride) - as far as I know it was the only 'Z' available at any of their stores. I think that Jim at Trinity had some (gone now), and I believe Guitar Adoptions had a couple of OMs (gone) and still has 2 Ls. Artisan Guitars in Tennessee has an LV and an OM. I haven't seen any Z-Dreds anywhere, so you really have something special there!

Is your D really, really loud? The OM really projects. It would be great to get together and compare - do you ever make it down Atlanta, GA way?

Congratulations again, both on your D-03Z and new marriage - May they both bring you a lifetime of happiness!

Oh...and we'll be looking for those pictures!

Zombie thread resurrection alert...

Are you still around and how has the zebrano aged, if so?

Funny you mention sapele as it's my fave tonewood. Any more thoughts on these two after all these years?

Zebrawood still seems to be a custom option, which is interesting. I like these "in between" woods like sapele, zebrawood, Bhilwara, laurel ...
